BMW Key Fob Mystery: Start Button Won't Respond

Locking/Unlocking issue

Ignition cannot be switched on

Hi all! Having issues with my 2016 BMW 1 Series (191k km, gasoline). The central locking system is acting up and I need to insert the key to start the car, which wasn't necessary before. Got an error code stored too. Last mechanic visit wasn't great, so looking for experiences with similar symptoms, possibly related to a faulty bumper antenna? Any recommendations for fixing this? Don't want to get ripped off again. Thanks in advance!

Had the same problem with my 2013 BMW 3 Series last month. Cable connection to the key antenna was damaged, causing intermittent key detection issues. Key wouldn't be recognized, forcing manual key use, and central locking went crazy sometimes. Got it checked at a garage, turned out the wiring harness connector to the key antenna module was corroded and loose. Not a major repair, but definitely needed fixing to avoid further electrical system problems. Tech showed me the damaged connector, could see the corrosion clearly. Your symptoms sound identical to what I experienced. While the bumper antenna could be the culprit, I'd have them check the main key antenna connections first. Much more common issue in these models.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Glad to hear I'm not the only one with this headache. What you described is exactly what I'm dealing with. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much the repair set you back? Also, has everything been working smoothly since you got it fixed? Just want to make sure I'm not in for any surprises with my BMW once I get this sorted.

Hey there again! Yeah, happy to report that after getting it fixed at the mechanic, everything's been working like a charm! The repair job cost me 95€, they had to sort out a dodgy cable connection to the key antenna module. Honestly, it was worth every penny. The car's been perfect since, no more fumbling with manual keys or dealing with that annoying central locking drama. Been about a month now, and the key detection is spot on every single time. Talk about a relief! Trust me, once you get it sorted, you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner. The price I paid seems pretty reasonable for the peace of mind it's given me. These BMWs can be finicky with their electronics, but at least this fix was straightforward and not too harsh on the wallet!

Just got back from the mechanic and wow, you were absolutely right! They found the same issue with the corroded antenna connection. The repair cost was actually pretty close to what you paid, and I couldn't be happier with the result. The mechanic was super transparent, showed me the damaged parts, and explained everything. Such a relief after my last disappointing garage experience. The best part? No more wrestling with manual keys or unusual central locking surprises. The car starts perfectly now, just like when I first got it. Really appreciate your help on this one. Saved me from potentially getting overcharged or having unnecessary work done. Sometimes these BMW quirks can be nerve-wracking, but this turned out to be a pretty simple fix. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!
