BMW Key Fob Failure: Battery or Bigger Issue?

Key fob issues

|

Fault stored

Hey everyone! Having some trouble with my 2020 BMW 2 Series (100k km, gas engine). The keyless entry stopped working completely and I'm getting warning messages on the dash. My car's computer is showing some error codes too. Pretty sure it's just a key battery issue, but my last mechanic experience wasn't great, so I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Did it turn out to be just a battery problem or something more serious? Looking for recommendations on the best way to handle this. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I actually had a similar issue with my 2017 BMW 3 Series last month. The symptoms were exactly like yours, keyless entry failed and got those annoying dashboard warnings. At first, I thought it was just the key fob battery too, but it turned out to be more complex. The key's internal circuit board had developed a fault, and the car's security system wasn't recognizing the transponder chip properly. Had to get a complete key reprogramming and replacement at a specialized shop. The repair wasn't just changing batteries, they had to sync the new key with the car's computer system and clear all the error codes. Took about half a day to fix, but it's been working perfectly since then. Based on what you're describing, I'd suggest getting it checked by a certified dealer or specialized BMW shop. These security systems are pretty sophisticated, and while it could be just a battery, those symptoms often point to something in the key's electronics or the car's security module.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful since it sounds exactly like my situation. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much the whole repair set you back? Also, has everything been working smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other quirks pop up?

Hey again! Glad I could help! Actually, I got lucky, in my case, it really was just the key battery causing all that drama, unlike the more complex issue I initially had. I took it to a certified shop last week, and they sorted it out pretty quickly. Only cost me 37 € to replace and reprogram the key battery, which was a huge relief considering what I went through before! Everything's been working perfectly since then, the keyless entry is back to normal, those annoying dashboard warnings have completely disappeared, and the car's running like a charm. No more fumbling with the key or getting those battery warnings on the dash! I know I might have scared you a bit with my first response about the complicated repairs, but sometimes these things really do turn out to be simple fixes. Just shows how our cars can make something small seem like a major problem with all those warning messages! Hope this gives you some peace of mind. If you're still having issues, definitely get it checked out, might be as simple as my fix was this time around!

Thanks for the follow-up! I actually took your advice and got it sorted today. What a relief, turned out to be even simpler than expected! The mechanic I found was great, totally different from my last experience. They diagnosed it right away, just a faulty key fob battery and a minor programming glitch. Fixed it in about an hour, and it only cost me around 50 bucks. All those scary warning lights are gone now, and the keyless entry works perfectly again. Funny how we sometimes expect the worst, right? I was imagining some major electrical system failure, but nope, just a dying battery causing all that drama. The mechanic even showed me how to check the key fob battery level myself for future reference. Really appreciate your help in pointing me in the right direction. Car's running like new now, and I've finally found a mechanic I can trust. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it definitely helped me make the right call!
