BMW Key Fob Dead? Warning Lights Signal Battery Issue

Key fob issues

|

Fault stored

Hey everyone! My 2015 BMW 6 Series (137,497 km, gas engine) is acting up. The keyless entry stopped working completely and I'm getting some warning lights on the dash. The car's showing an error code too. Pretty sure it might be a low key battery, but I had a sketchy experience with my mechanic last time and I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Looking for recommendations on whether this is a simple battery replacement or if there might be something more serious going on. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had the exact same issue with my 2012 BMW 5 Series last month. Started with the keyless entry failing, then dashboard warnings popped up. Got it checked at the garage, turned out the key fob battery was completely dead, which was causing the system to malfunction. The interesting part was that when they ran diagnostics, they discovered the key's internal circuit board had some minor corrosion from battery leakage. Had to get both the battery replaced and the contacts cleaned. Not a major repair, but definitely needed professional attention to prevent further issues with the car's security system. It's a pretty common issue with BMWs from that generation. While changing the key battery is typically straightforward, I'd recommend getting it checked at a dealer or certified BMW shop just to make sure there's no damage to the key's electronics. Better safe than sorry with these sophisticated key systems.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! That's really helpful, sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. How much did you end up paying for the whole fix? Also, just wondering if you've had any other issues pop up since they sorted it out? Cheers!

Hey there! Glad I could help! Since I got it fixed last month, everything's been working perfectly, no more warning lights or keyless entry problems. The total cost was 37€ for replacing the battery and cleaning those corroded contacts. Pretty reasonable, considering I was worried it might be something more serious! Haven't had a single issue since the repair. The key fob works like new now, and all those annoying dashboard warnings disappeared completely. It's such a relief when these things turn out to be simple fixes, right? Trust me, it's worth getting it checked out by a professional, saves you headaches down the road. Best of luck with yours! Let me know how it goes.

Thanks for all the info! Just wanted to update you, I took your advice and got it sorted yesterday. Found a certified mechanic who actually specializes in European cars. You were spot on, it was exactly what you described! The key fob battery was completely dead and there was some minor corrosion on the contacts. The whole thing cost me 45€, which wasn't bad at all. They were super professional and even showed me what was causing the issue. Such a relief it wasn't anything major! The car's running perfectly now, no more warning lights, and the keyless entry works like a charm. Really appreciate you sharing your experience. Saved me from stressing about potential bigger problems. Always good to know these things are often simpler than they seem! Take care!
