BMW iX2 Won't Start: Access System and Lock Mystery

Car won't start

|

Fault stored

Hey all, having strange issues with my 2024 BMW iX2. The car won't start, steering lock is stuck, and I'm getting error messages on the dash. The error log shows something's stored in the memory. I suspect it might be related to the car access system, but I'm not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Really interested to hear about repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be at the workshop.

Hey there! I have some experience with EVs and faced a very similar issue with my 2022 BMW iX3 (also have an i4 in the family). From what you're describing, it sounds exactly like what I dealt with, turned out to be a faulty door handle electronics system. The sensors in the handle weren't communicating properly with the car's central locking and start system. Had to take it to the workshop where they diagnosed and replaced the handle unit. Cost me around 480 Euro to fix, but it's been working perfectly since then. Before I can help more specifically, could you share: Are all door handles responding when you use the key fob? Does this happen consistently or intermittently? Any recent software updates? Let me know these details and I can share more about how mine was resolved.

Thanks for the detailed response! Mine's at 98083 KM, and just had its latest service last month. I'm having the exact same symptoms you described, checked all door handles and they're responding inconsistently. Sometimes they work fine, other times completely dead. Haven't done any software updates recently though. Good to know about the handle unit being the potential culprit. I'll definitely have that checked out first. Did your warranty cover the repair? Since mine's a 2024, I'm hoping it'll be covered under the factory warranty.

Hey again! Yeah, I totally get your concerns about the warranty. Since mine was a 2022 model and just out of warranty when this happened, I had to pay for it myself (that 480 Euro I mentioned). But you're in luck, your 2024 iX2 should definitely still be under factory warranty, so this repair shouldn't cost you anything. Just to add to my previous experience, when this happened to my iX3, the inconsistent door handle response was actually the first sign something was wrong. Started just like yours, working sometimes and not others. Then it escalated to the starting issues and steering lock problems within about a week. Quick tip based on what I learned: when you take it in, make sure they check both the handle unit AND the wiring harness connecting it to the main system. In my case, they initially just looked at the handle unit, but there was also a minor issue with the wiring that they caught during the second inspection. Otherwise, they might just replace the handle and you could end up with the same problem coming back. Since you mentioned having the same symptoms, I'd strongly suggest getting it to the workshop ASAP. The problem tends to get worse, and you definitely don't want to end up stranded somewhere with a completely unresponsive car like I did!

Thanks so much for the detailed insight! This is super helpful, especially the tip about checking both the handle unit and wiring harness. I've already called the workshop and booked it in for tomorrow morning. Really glad I caught this early before it got worse, definitely don't fancy being stranded with an unresponsive car! Will make sure to specifically mention your experience with the wiring harness too, so they can check everything thoroughly. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. It's honestly such a relief to know exactly what I might be dealing with, especially since it's a known issue with a clear fix. I'll update the thread once I get it back from the workshop, in case anyone else runs into the same problem.
