BMW iX2 Power Loss: Critical High-Voltage System Issues

Engine shuts off by itself

Hey all, dealing with a frustrating issue with my 2024 BMW iX2. The car suddenly loses power and shuts off, showing reduced engine power warnings along with a high-voltage system error message. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms with their electric BMW? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and what the workshop diagnosed. Thanks!

Hey there! I have some experience with EVs and went through something very similar with my 2022 BMW i4. Also had my iX3 before that, so I'm quite familiar with BMW's electric lineup. Last summer, my i4 showed those exact same symptoms, sudden power loss and system warnings. Turned out the high-voltage battery had a faulty cell that was causing the whole system to shut down as a safety measure. Took it to my workshop, and they ran a full diagnostic. The repair, including labor and parts, cost me 290 Euro. Before I share more specific details about what fixed it, could you tell me if you notice any patterns when these shutdowns occur? Like during acceleration or after the car sits for a while? Also, what's your battery charge level typically at when this happens? This info would help determine if you're facing the same issue I did. BTW, have you tried the basic reset by leaving the car powered down for about 15 minutes? Sometimes that can help temporarily, though you'll still need to get it checked out.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the i4! My iX2 has 74219 KM on it and was just serviced last month. The shutdowns seem unusual, they've happened at different charge levels (20-80%) and different driving conditions. No clear pattern yet. Haven't tried the 15-minute reset, will definitely give that a shot before taking it to the workshop. The battery diagnostic warning does worry me though. Were there any warning signs before your battery cell issue got serious?

Hey again! Yeah, looking back at my i4 experience, there were actually some subtle signs before the major shutdown issues started. About 2-3 weeks before things got really bad, I noticed the range estimates were becoming pretty inconsistent, jumping around more than usual. Also had this weird thing where the power gauge would occasionally flicker during normal driving, but it was so brief I didn't think much of it at first. Interesting that your shutdowns are happening across different charge levels. Mine were mostly happening when I was below 40% charge, which was one of the clues that helped the techs diagnose the faulty cell. But every case can be different, you know? The 15-minute reset might help temporarily, but honestly, with those symptoms and especially that battery diagnostic warning, I'd get it checked out soon. When my cell went bad, it started affecting the whole high-voltage system pretty quickly. The repair wasn't too bad though, they had my car back to me in about two days. Definitely keep an eye on your range estimates too, if they start getting really unpredictable, that's another red flag. Would love to hear if the reset helps at all when you try it!

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! That's super helpful about the range estimates and power gauge flickering, now that you mention it, I've noticed my range numbers have been a bit wonky lately, jumping around more than usual. Definitely going to pay closer attention to that. I'll try the reset tonight and book a workshop appointment first thing tomorrow, don't want to risk this getting worse like yours did. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, especially about the repair timeline. Two days without the car isn't too bad, considering how serious this could be. Will let you know how it goes after they check it out. Thank you again for taking the time to help me understand what might be going on!
