BMW iX2 Jerking: Transfer Case & AWD System Problems

Transmission slips/shifts erratically

Hey there, need some help with my 2024 BMW iX2! My car's acting strange with jerking movements during steady speeds, throwing error messages, and having transmission issues. The all-wheel drive system is also failing. I suspect it might be related to transfer case oil wear, but I'm not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms and got them fixed? Would really appreciate hearing about your repair experiences and what the workshop found. Thanks in advance!

Hi! I have some experience working with EVs and had a similar issue with my 2022 BMW iX. Was quite worried when it started acting up like yours. Had the exact same symptoms, jerking, error messages, and transmission problems. Took it to my regular workshop, and they found defective gears in the transfer case. The fix wasn't cheap, cost me 330 Euro, but it solved all the issues completely. Before I share more specifics about my repair experience, could you share: Have you noticed any unusual sounds? When did these symptoms first start? Does it happen more during acceleration or at constant speed? BTW, I also own a BMW i4, and these powertrains can be tricky sometimes. Let me know these details, and I'll share more about what worked for my car.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I've got 192418 KM on the clock, and yeah, I've been noticing some weird grinding noises lately, especially when accelerating from a stop. The symptoms started about two weeks ago, and they're definitely worse during acceleration. It's really frustrating since the car's been great until now. I'm worried it might be something serious with the drivetrain. Just had my last service done three months ago, and everything was fine then. Your repair cost sounds reasonable compared to what I was expecting, I was worried it might be thousands! Did you also get any battery system warnings along with the transfer case issues?

Hey again! Thanks for those extra details about your iX2. Yeah, those grinding noises you're describing sound exactly like what I experienced with my iX. The similarity is uncanny, I had around 190000 KM when my issues started too. And to answer your question, yes, I actually did get some battery system warnings! They would pop up out of nowhere, but they were really just a symptom of the transfer case problem, not a separate battery issue. Once the transfer case was fixed, those warnings disappeared completely. Just a heads up based on my experience, I first noticed the grinding at around 188000 KM but waited a couple weeks before getting it checked (big mistake, by the way). The longer you wait, the more strain you're putting on other components. The grinding during acceleration is particularly concerning because that's exactly how mine started before it got worse. The 330 Euro I mentioned earlier was just for the repair work and new gears, I had to pay a bit extra for some additional seals they found needed replacing while they were in there. But still way better than a complete transfer case replacement! Since you mentioned your recent service, did they do any transfer case oil check during that service? Sometimes these issues can start developing even if everything looked fine during routine maintenance. Let me know if you want more specific details about what they did during my repair, I kept all the documentation.

Thanks so much for all that detailed info! That's actually really reassuring to hear that your battery warnings were just related to the transfer case, I was getting worried it might be two separate expensive problems. You're absolutely right about not waiting too long, I'm going to book it in tomorrow. Don't want to risk causing more damage, especially after what you've shared about your experience. My service records don't mention anything specific about transfer case oil checks, so I'll definitely have them look at that first. Would you mind sharing a copy of your repair documentation? Might be helpful to show my mechanic exactly what was done on yours, since the symptoms are so similar. Seems like I caught it at about the same mileage point as you did too, which makes me feel better about the whole situation. Thanks again for all your help, really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience!
