BMW iX1 Washer Fluid System Failure: Causes & Solutions

Headlight cleaning system without function

|

Fault stored

Hey all! Having trouble with my 2022 BMW iX1 electric. The washer fluid system completely stopped working, pump isn't responding and I'm getting an error message. The warning light shows low washer fluid, but I've checked and the reservoir is actually full. Has anyone dealt with this issue before? Wondering what your repair shop found and fixed, and what it ended up costing. Any tips would be really helpful!

Hey there! I've got some experience with EVs (low experience). Had a similar issue with my 2020 BMW iX3 last winter. The washer fluid warning kept popping up even though the tank was full. Turned out the sensor was acting up and needed a good cleaning. Took it to my regular workshop, super quick fix. They cleaned the sensor contacts and topped up with fresh washer fluid, just to be safe. Only paid 25 Euro for the whole thing. Before you head to a shop though, what's the exact error message you're getting? Also, can you hear the pump trying to work when you activate the washers? Might help narrow down if it's just a sensor thing like mine or something else. By the way, always nice to meet another BMW EV owner. How are you liking your iX1 otherwise?

Thanks for sharing your experience! At 63868 KM, I've loved the iX1 so far, but this washer issue is definitely annoying. When I try to use the washers, there's absolutely no sound from the pump, complete silence. The error message just says "Check washer fluid level" with the yellow warning light. I've double-checked everything visible, and the reservoir is definitely full. Interesting that cleaning the sensor fixed your issue. That would definitely be the best-case scenario! I'll probably still take it to the service center since I've got scheduled maintenance coming up anyway, but it's good to know it might not be anything major. Did your pump make any noise when you had your sensor problem?

Hey again! Thanks for the additional details about your iX1. Hmm, your symptoms actually sound a bit different from what I experienced with my iX3. In my case, even with the faulty sensor, I could still hear the pump running when I activated the washers. The fact that you're getting complete silence is making me think this might be more than just a sensor issue. From my experience with BMW electrics, it could be the pump itself that's failed. When my friend's older 3 series had this exact same symptom (no noise, no function), it turned out to be a dead pump motor. They're not terribly expensive parts, but yeah, definitely something for the service center to handle. Since you mentioned you've got scheduled maintenance coming up anyway, that's perfect timing. Just make sure to specifically mention the complete silence when activating the washers, that'll help them diagnose it faster. Would love to hear what they find out, especially if it's something different from both our experiences. Keep us posted! By the way, 63868 KM is a solid amount of driving, glad to hear you're enjoying the car otherwise. These little issues pop up sometimes, but overall these EVs are pretty reliable, aren't they?

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! You're right, the symptoms do sound different from your sensor issue, and I'm a bit worried it might be the pump like your 's car. I'll definitely emphasize the complete silence problem when I take it in. I've got the service appointment scheduled for next week, and I'll let you know what they find. Really hoping it's not too expensive, but at least these things are covered under warranty since the car's still fairly new. And yeah, you're absolutely right about the reliability, this is literally the first issue I've had since getting the car. Even with this problem, I'm still super happy with my choice to go electric. The performance and comfort are just amazing, and the running costs have been way lower than my old gas car. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it's really helpful to hear from other EV owners who've dealt with similar issues!
