BMW iX1 Central Lock Failure, Solutions & Causes

Vehicle cannot be unlocked or locked

|

Fault stored

Hi all, having trouble with my 2022 BMW iX1. The central locking system has completely stopped working, can't lock or unlock any doors, and there's an error code stored in the system. Has anyone dealt with this issue before? Particularly interested in what your mechanic diagnosed and how they fixed it. Any insights would be helpful.

Hey there! I have some experience working on EVs and faced a similar issue with my 2020 BMW iX3 (also have an i4 in the family). I totally get your frustration with the central locking, it's a real pain when it fails. My problem turned out to be a faulty wiring connection to the door module. The workshop found a loose connector that was causing intermittent failures in the system. Got it fixed for about 95 Euro, they basically had to reseat and secure the connection properly. Before I can give more specific advice, could you share: Does the key fob battery have enough power? Are you getting any specific error messages? Does this happen with both manual and remote locking? Let me know these details and I might be able to help further based on my experience!

Thanks for the detailed response! Just had my service done last week at 187842 KM, and I've tried everything with the key fob, even replaced the battery. Yes, it's happening with both manual and remote locking. The error message reads "Central Locking System Malfunction" on the display. Nothing seems to work, not even the physical key in the driver's door. Interesting that you mention the wiring connection, makes me wonder if that's the culprit here too. Did your car also have issues with the trunk release when this happened? My trunk button isn't responding either, which seems related. At this point, I'm just trying to avoid a costly dealer visit if there's a simpler fix.

Hey again! Thanks for those extra details about your BMW. When you mentioned the trunk release not working either, it immediately reminded me of my experience, yes, I had the exact same issue! My trunk button was also unresponsive when the central locking failed. Based on what you're describing, it's sounding very similar to what I dealt with. Since you've already ruled out the key fob battery (smart move checking that first!), and given that both manual and remote functions aren't working, plus the trunk issue, I'm even more convinced it's likely a wiring problem like mine was. Quick question, before it completely failed, did you notice any intermittent issues? Like sometimes working, sometimes not? In my case, it started acting up occasionally for about a week before it completely gave up. The fact that your physical key isn't working in the driver's door also matches my experience, it's typically a sign that the electronic door control module isn't communicating properly. The good news is that if it's the same issue, it's usually not as expensive as some of the other potential central locking problems. My repair was relatively straightforward once they identified the loose connection. You might want to have a mechanic check the wiring harness near the door hinge area, that's where they found my problem. Would you like me to explain what the repair process looked like for mine? It might help you know what to expect if you do need to take it in.

Thanks so much for this information, it's super helpful! And yes, now that you mention it, I did notice some intermittent issues about two weeks ago. The doors would sometimes take two or three attempts to lock, but I honestly didn't think much of it at the time. Really kicking myself for not addressing it sooner! It's actually quite reassuring to hear that your repair wasn't too complex or expensive. I was honestly preparing myself for a massive repair bill! I'll definitely get my mechanic to check the wiring harness near the door hinge area first, would love to hear more about your repair process if you don't mind sharing. I've got the car booked in for tomorrow morning, so any additional info would help me know what to expect and make sure they're looking in the right places. Thanks again for taking the time to help out, it's made me feel a lot more confident about dealing with this issue. Always great to hear from someone who's been through the same thing!
