BMW iX Temperature Controls Failed, Multiple Issues

A/C System Not Engaging

Hi all! My 2021 BMW iX is having issues with temperature-related functions. The temp display is dead, climate control isn't working, and there's an error code present. Mirror heating is also non-functional, and the washer nozzles freeze up in cold weather. I suspect a faulty outside temperature sensor might be the culprit. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms on their iX? Particularly interested in hearing about repair solutions and workshop experiences. Thanks in advance for any insights!

Hey there! I have some experience with EVs and had a similar issue with my 2019 BMW i4 (the iX's smaller sibling). The symptoms were almost identical, temp display went blank, climate control acted up, and even the mirror heating stopped working. Took it to my workshop and they found a loose connection in the wiring harness that connects to the temperature sensor. The cable had worked itself loose over time, causing all these temperature-related functions to go haywire. Total repair cost was 95 Euro, mainly labor for diagnosing and fixing the connection. Quick fix once they found the issue, but it made a world of difference. Mind sharing your current mileage and if you've noticed any other electrical quirks? Could help narrow down if we're dealing with the same problem. Best!

Thanks for sharing your experience! Currently at 120730 KM and just had my service last month. That's really helpful to know about the wiring harness, definitely sounds similar to what I'm experiencing. Haven't noticed any other electrical issues besides these temperature-related ones. Guess I'll need to book it in and have them check those connections. Really appreciate the tip about checking the wiring first rather than just replacing the entire sensor. Hopefully it'll be a similarly straightforward fix!

Hey there again! Yeah, after fixing that wiring issue on my i4, everything's been running perfectly for the past year. Just wanted to follow up since I noticed you're at 120k km, mine was around 95k when the problem started, so that timing tracks pretty well. Quick tip from my experience: when you take it in, ask them to check the entire length of the wiring harness, not just the connection point. My mechanic found some slight wear in other spots that could've caused problems down the line, so we went ahead and secured those areas too. Didn't add much to the labor cost but probably saved me another workshop visit. Also, funny thing, while they were fixing mine, they mentioned they'd seen this exact issue on several other BMW EVs. Apparently, it's more common than we might think. The good news is that once it's properly fixed, it tends to stay fixed. Let us know how it goes when you get it checked out. I'm curious if it'll be the same root cause as mine. These EVs are great cars, but they do have their quirks!

Thanks for the detailed follow-up! Really good to know about checking the entire harness, I'll definitely mention that when I take it in. It's actually quite reassuring to hear this is a known issue with a reliable fix. Just booked an appointment for next week, and I'll make sure to ask them to do that complete harness inspection you mentioned. Interesting that the timing lines up with your experience at similar mileage. Makes sense why it's happening now. And you're right about these EVs, love my iX despite these little quirks! I'll post an update once I get it sorted. Thanks again for all the helpful advice, you've saved me a lot of worry about potentially needing a full sensor replacement!

Let our mechanics help you!
