BMW iX Secondary Air Pump Issues & Engine Stalling

Check engine light on

Hey everyone! Having trouble with my 2023 BMW iX acting up recently. The secondary air pump is misbehaving, engine stalls frequently, and there's noticeable jerking during operation. Check engine light is also on. I suspect it might be related to the air valve, but not entirely sure. Has anyone encountered similar symptoms? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and what the actual issue turned out to be. Particularly interested in workshop solutions that worked for you. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I have some experience with EVs and went through something very similar with my 2021 BMW i4. I feel your pain, these issues can be really frustrating! Had almost identical symptoms, engine stalling, jerking, and that dreaded check engine light. Turned out the hose connection from the pump to the valve was faulty in my case. Got it fixed at the workshop last month, cost me around 175 Euro but it's been running smoothly since. Before jumping to conclusions though, could you share: Any unusual sounds when starting the car? How long has this been happening? Have you had any recent maintenance work done? I've also owned a BMW iX3, so I'm somewhat familiar with their common quirks. Let me know these details and I might be able to offer more specific advice.

Thanks for the detailed response! Mine has 168678 KM on the clock and was just serviced last week, which makes this even more puzzling. Haven't noticed any weird sounds at startup, but the jerking started about two weeks ago. Initially thought it was just a temporary glitch, but it's getting more frequent now. I appreciate you sharing your experience with the hose connection issue. That's definitely worth checking out, especially since the symptoms match. Did your workshop mention any other potential causes they ruled out during the diagnosis? It'd be really helpful to know what else they looked at while fixing yours.

Hey again! Thanks for following up. Yeah, these BMWs can be tricky sometimes, even right after servicing. After dealing with my i4's issues, I learned quite a bit about these problems. When my workshop did the diagnosis, they actually checked quite a few things before pinpointing the hose connection. They looked at the air mass sensor, checked the vacuum lines, and tested the electrical connections to the pump. They also mentioned it could've been a faulty control module, but fortunately it wasn't that serious in my case. Since yours started after servicing, I'm wondering if something got knocked loose during the maintenance work. Mine actually started acting up after an oil change, which is what led them to check the connections first. The jerking in my case got worse over about three weeks before I took it in. One thing I forgot to mention in my first reply, before fixing the hose, my mechanic tried cleaning the air valve assembly, thinking it might just be gunked up. Didn't solve the problem, but might be worth trying in your case since it's a quick fix. If you're still under warranty, I'd definitely get it back to the dealer. If not, find a good BMW specialist, these issues can be pretty specific to our models. Let me know how it goes!

Thanks so much for all this insight! Really helpful to know they checked the air mass sensor and vacuum lines too. I hadn't considered that something might have gotten loose during the service, that's actually a really good point since the timing matches up. I'll definitely try cleaning the air valve assembly first, seems like a sensible starting point. If that doesn't work, I'll take it to my specialist and have them check those hose connections you mentioned. The fact that your symptoms were so similar gives me hope it's not something more serious like the control module. Think I'll give the cleaning a shot this weekend and will make an appointment with my mechanic for next week just to be safe. Really appreciate all your help and experience with this, you've given me a much clearer direction on what to look into first!

Let our mechanics help you!
