BMW iX Mirror Failure: Heated & Auto-Dim Features Dead

Fault stored

Mirror doesn't defrost

Hey everyone! Having some trouble with my 2022 BMW iX (electric). The heated mirrors stopped working completely and the auto-dimming function is dead too. Got an error code stored in the system. I had a not-so-great experience with my previous mechanic, so I'm hesitant about where to take it. Anyone dealt with similar mirror issues on their iX? Would love to hear about your experiences and if you can recommend a reliable fix. Car's at 133,578 km. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2019 BMW i4 last winter. The heated mirrors and auto-dimming stopped working suddenly. Turned out to be a faulty wiring connection in the mirror assembly where the cables had worked themselves loose over time. The repair wasn't particularly complex, the main problem was diagnosing it correctly. My mechanic had to remove the mirror housing and reconnect the wiring harness properly. They also replaced a corroded connector that was causing intermittent function. It wasn't a serious mechanical issue, just annoying and needed proper attention to detail. Since your iX is newer than my i4, I'd recommend getting it checked at a shop that specializes in BMW EVs. These mirror systems are pretty sophisticated with multiple functions running through the same wiring assembly. A proper diagnostic scan should pinpoint if it's just a connection issue like mine was or if there's a bigger problem with the control module. Good luck with the repair.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful since I've been worried about this mirror issue. It's good to know it might just be a wiring problem rather than something more serious. Mind if I ask what the repair ended up costing you? Also, have you had any other issues pop up with the mirrors since getting them fixed? Just want to know what I might be in for with mine.

Hey again! Happy to update you! I actually just got this fixed last week. You'll be glad to hear it was indeed just a loose connection, just like I suspected from my previous experience. The mechanic found a damaged cable connection in the mirror assembly. Total bill came to 95 Euro, pretty reasonable considering I was worried it might be something more serious! Since the repair, everything's working perfectly again, both the heating and auto-dimming functions are back to normal. No issues whatsoever. It's such a relief, especially with the cold weather coming up. The fix was pretty straightforward once they identified the exact problem. And to answer your question about other issues, nope, haven't had any other mirror problems since my original repair on my i4. These things are usually one-and-done fixes as long as they're done properly. Just make sure whoever works on it knows their way around BMW electronics, and you should be good to go. Let me know how yours turns out!

Thanks for all that info! I actually went ahead and got mine fixed yesterday. You were spot on about finding someone who knows BMW electronics, made all the difference. Turned out my issue was slightly different though. The mechanic found a blown fuse and a faulty control module that needed replacing. Cost me a bit more than yours, around 280 Euro, but honestly, I'm just relieved it's sorted. The mirrors are working perfectly now, both heating and auto-dimming. The mechanic walked me through everything they did, which was refreshing after my last bad experience. They even showed me the old parts and explained what went wrong. Much better than my previous guy who just handed me a bill and rushed me out the door. Really appreciate everyone's help here. Nothing worse than going in blind with car repairs, especially with these newer EVs. Glad I asked!

Let our mechanics help you!
