BMW i8 Tailgate Failure: Hall Sensor Diagnosis Needed

Tailgate does not open automatically

|

Fault stored

Hey all! Having trouble with my 2017 BMW i8 (73,718 km). The tailgate's acting up, won't fully open or close, and there's an error code stored. I suspect it might be the hall sensor going bad. Had some sketchy work done at my last mechanic visit, so I'm a bit wary about going back. Has anyone dealt with similar tailgate issues on their i8? Any recommendations for fixing this? Would love to hear about your experiences and what it cost to sort out. Thanks in advance!

I had a similar issue with my 2020 BMW i3s Hybrid last month. The tailgate sensor was giving me the same trouble, partial opening and unusual error codes. After taking it to the garage, they found it wasn't actually the hall sensor but a faulty wiring connection in the tailgate harness. Some wires had gotten pinched and were causing intermittent connectivity issues. It wasn't a major repair, but definitely needed professional attention since it involved the electrical system. The mechanic had to remove the tailgate trim, replace a section of the wiring harness, and recalibrate the system. Took about half a day to fix. It wasn't a serious issue in terms of car safety, but leaving it unfixed could've led to more electrical problems down the line. If you're not comfortable with your previous mechanic, I'd recommend finding a certified BMW specialist who can properly diagnose the electrical system. These tailgate issues can be tricky if not fixed correctly the first time.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! Really helpful to hear about a similar problem, even if it was on an i3s. Good to know it turned out to be a wiring issue rather than the sensor itself, I'll definitely keep that in mind. Just wondering, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also, has everything been working smoothly since they fixed it? I'm trying to get an idea of what I might be looking at cost-wise and whether I should expect any follow-up issues. Thanks again for your help with this!

Hey there! Happy to give you an update on my i3s situation. The repair went really well, everything's been working perfectly since I got it fixed. The mechanic found and sorted the cable connection issue with the tailgate hall sensor, and I haven't had a single problem since. The whole thing came to 95 Euro, which honestly wasn't as bad as I was expecting for a BMW repair. It's been such a relief having it working properly again, no more partial opening or error messages popping up. The tailgate now opens and closes smoothly every time, just like it should. I'd say if you're seeing similar symptoms, it's worth getting it checked out sooner rather than later. Best money I've spent on the car recently, to be honest! Let me know how you get on with yours. Always interested to hear how these things work out for others.

Thanks for all that info! Really glad to hear your repair worked out well and wasn't too expensive. Actually, I bit the bullet and took my i8 to a different mechanic yesterday. Turns out you were spot on, it was a wiring issue! Some cables had gotten damaged, probably from the previous repair work. The new mechanic was great, really thorough and explained everything. Fixed the wiring and recalibrated the system. Cost me a bit more than yours, but the tailgate's working perfectly now. What a relief! No more wrestling with it every time I need to access the trunk. Definitely learned my lesson about finding a reliable mechanic. Should've switched ages ago. Thanks again for your help, really made me feel better about getting it sorted!
