BMW i8 Parking Sensors Gone Haywire: Fix Needed

Fault stored

|

Park distance control without function

Hey everyone! Having some trouble with my 2016 BMW i8 (31,896 km). The parking sensors are completely dead, and there's this super annoying constant beep whenever I put it in reverse. The diagnostic check shows there's an error code stored. Has anyone dealt with similar parking aid issues on their i8? What was the fix, and how much did it set you back? After a bad experience with my previous mechanic, I'd appreciate some advice before taking it in again. Thanks in advance!

Had the same problem with my 2019 BMW i3s Hybrid last month. The constant reverse beeping was driving me crazy too. Took it to a certified dealer after my scan tool showed the sensor fault code. Turns out the main wiring harness connecting the parking sensors had corroded connections, and one of the plugs was actually damaged. The moisture had gotten in through a worn grommet. It wasn't just a simple sensor replacement like I initially thought. The technician had to replace the entire wiring harness assembly and reconnect all parking sensors. It was a pretty serious job since they had to remove parts of the rear bumper to access everything properly. The work took about 4-5 hours to complete. The good news is that once fixed, the system works perfectly now, no more unusual beeping or dead sensors. My advice would be to get it checked at a certified BMW service center since they'll have the proper diagnostic tools and parts for these specific models. Just make sure they thoroughly check the wiring connections before jumping to replace the sensors themselves.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful. I'm actually dealing with what sounds like the exact same issue. The corrosion explanation makes a lot of sense given the symptoms. Do you remember roughly how much the repair ended up costing you? Also, has everything stayed working properly since the fix, or have you noticed any other electrical quirks popping up? I want to make sure I budget properly and know what to watch out for.

Hey there! Happy to give you an update. Actually, I just got my i3s back from the mechanic last week and I'm glad to report it was way less painful than I expected! Turns out it wasn't nearly as complicated as my repair from last month. The mechanic found a faulty cable connection that just needed proper fixing, no need for that whole wiring harness replacement I mentioned before. Total bill came to 95 Euro, which was a massive relief compared to what I originally paid. The parking aid is working perfectly now, those annoying beeps are completely gone and the sensors are super responsive. It's been about a week of daily driving and no electrical gremlins or other issues have shown up. The system's working just like it did when the car was new. Really hoping you get the same straightforward fix I did this time around. Sometimes these electrical issues can be scary, but they often turn out to be simpler than we fear. Let us know how it goes when you get yours sorted!

Just wanted to update everyone on what happened with my i8. Finally took it to the mechanic yesterday after gathering all your helpful advice. I was honestly dreading what they might find, but it turned out pretty well! The mechanic found similar issues to what you guys mentioned, moisture damage and a loose connection in the wiring. Took them about three hours to fix everything, including cleaning up the corroded parts and securing the connections properly. Total cost was reasonable, definitely less than I'd feared. Drove it home today and everything's working perfectly, no more annoying beeps, and all parking sensors are responding like they should. Such a relief to have it sorted! Really appreciate everyone's input, helped me avoid getting overcharged or having unnecessary parts replaced. Time to enjoy my beep-free parking experience! I'll definitely keep an eye on those connections though, might get some protective coating applied next service to prevent future moisture issues.

Let our mechanics help you!
