BMW i8 Multiple Warning Lights & Heavy Steering Issues

Vibrating/shaking steering wheel

Power steering without function

Hi all! My 2019 BMW i8 Hybrid has been acting up lately. Multiple warning lights keep popping up (ESP, ABS, brake, steering), the power steering feels heavy, and the steering wheel shakes while driving. I suspect it might be related to the steering angle sensor, but I'm not entirely sure. Has anyone faced similar issues with their i8? Would love to hear about your experiences and how your workshop resolved it. Specifically interested in the diagnosis process and repair solutions. Thanks in advance!

Hi there! I have some experience with BMWs and had a similar issue with my 2017 BMW i3. It's interesting that you mention those warning lights because I faced almost the exact same problem last year. The steering got really heavy, and those warning lights were having a party on my dashboard too! Took it to my workshop and they diagnosed it as a faulty steering angle sensor coding. It was a bit nerve-wracking at first because all those warning lights make you think something major is wrong. The fix wasn't too complex, they recoded the sensor and calibrated the system. Cost me 195 Euro, and it's been working perfectly since then. Before I share more specific details about the repair process, could you share: Have you noticed any specific patterns when the warnings appear? Does it happen more when turning in a particular direction? Have you recently had any work done on the suspension or wheels? By the way, I also had experience with a BMW X3 in the family, and these steering sensors can be quite model-specific, so knowing these details would help me give you more relevant advice.

Hey, thanks for the detailed response! Mine's done 110974 KM and had its last service just 2 months ago. The warning lights typically show up out of nowhere, but I've noticed they're more frequent when making sharp right turns. The steering gets especially heavy during these moments. Nothing's been done to the suspension or wheels recently, which makes it even more puzzling. Really appreciate your insight about the steering angle sensor, that seems to match what I'm experiencing. Did you also notice any weird vibrations through the steering wheel before getting it fixed? The shaking's got me a bit concerned, and I'm wondering if it could be related to the same issue.

Hey again! Yes, I totally get what you're talking about with those vibrations! I actually experienced the same thing with my i3. Before I got it fixed, the steering wheel would shake, especially during right turns, just like yours. It's kind of uncanny how similar our issues are. The vibrations were definitely related to the faulty steering angle sensor in my case. What happens is when the sensor isn't reading correctly, it messes with the power steering system, causing those weird vibrations and the heavy steering feel. It's like the car doesn't know exactly where the wheels are pointing. You mentioning the 2-month-old service actually reminded me, my issues started a few weeks after a routine service too. Sometimes these problems can pop up if the sensor wasn't properly calibrated after work was done on the car, even if it wasn't directly related to the steering system. Quick tip from my experience, try not to wait too long to get it checked out. I made that mistake and drove around with it for a couple of weeks, which wasn't the smartest move. While it's usually not dangerous in the short term, it's better to get it sorted quickly to prevent any potential strain on other steering components. Want me to share more details about what the repair process was like? Might help you know what to expect when you take it in.

Thanks, this is super helpful! Yes, please tell me more about the repair process, I'd definitely like to know what I'm in for. It's really reassuring to hear someone else had such a similar experience, especially with the vibrations during right turns. I was getting worried it might be something more serious with the suspension or steering rack. Think I'll book it in this week rather than risk making it worse. Since your fix only cost around 195 Euro and wasn't too complex, that's put my mind at ease a bit. Did you get yours done at a BMW dealer or an independent workshop? I'm just trying to decide where to take mine.
