Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Need advice: BMW i8 (2017) EPB system completely dead Having trouble with my 2017 BMW i8 Hybrid (16,716 km). The electronic parking brake isn't working at all, and several driver assistance features are down. Also getting warning lights on the dash. After a bad experience with my previous mechanic, I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar EPB issues on their i8? What was the solution, and can you recommend what to look out for when choosing a mechanic for this repair? Thanks in advance!

Hey there. Had the same EPB issue on my 2014 BMW i3 Hybrid last season. Initially thought it was just a software glitch, but turned out the electric motor in the brake caliper was completely dead. Took it to a certified BMW service center since these newer hybrid systems are quite complex. The electric motor in the brake caliper had to be replaced along with some wiring. It was a serious repair job, as the faulty EPB also affected other driver assistance systems, exactly like your situation. Based on my experience, I'd strongly suggest going to a BMW certified center for this. The electronic systems in i-series cars are heavily integrated, and regular mechanics might not have the right diagnostic tools or expertise. The repair took about two days to complete on my i3, but it fixed all the warning lights and restored full functionality. Just make sure they do a complete system diagnostic before starting the work. These EPB issues can sometimes be linked to other electrical components.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! It's good to know I'm not the only one who's faced this. I've got a real dilemma with my i8, but your post gives me some hope. I was wondering, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything been working smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other quirks pop up? I'm trying to get an idea of what I might be in for with this repair.

Hey there! Just wanted to follow up about the cost since you asked. After getting it fixed at the BMW center, I'm happy to report the EPB issue was completely sorted out. The total came to 505 € for replacing the faulty electric motor in the brake caliper. I know that might sound steep, but honestly, it was worth every penny. My i3's been running like a dream since the repair, no warning lights, no glitches, nothing. The electronic parking brake works perfectly now, and all the driver assistance features are back to normal. It's been several months, and I haven't had a single problem with any of the systems. I'd say if you're seeing similar symptoms to what I had, you're probably looking at the same issue and repair cost. The peace of mind from having it properly fixed by certified techs was definitely worth it in my case. Let me know if you need any other details about the repair!

Thanks for all the detailed info! Just wanted to update you, I took your advice and bit the bullet. Went to a certified BMW center last week, and wow, what a difference from my previous mechanic experiences! They ran a full diagnostic and found the same issue you mentioned, faulty electric motor in the brake caliper. The repair took about three days because they had to order some special parts, but it was worth the wait. Bill came to around 600€, a bit more than yours but I guess that's the i8 tax! They also found and fixed a minor wiring issue while they were at it. Got my car back yesterday and it's running beautifully. All the warning lights are gone, EPB works perfectly, and those driver assistance features are back online. You were absolutely right about going to the certified center, their expertise made all the difference. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, helped me make the right call instead of trying to save money at a regular shop. Thanks again!
