BMW i8 Cooling System Troubles: Hybrid Help Needed

The display in the speedometer shows an incorrect temperature

Check engine light on

The engine takes considerably longer to reach operating temperature

Hey all! Having some worrying issues with my 2016 BMW i8 (96k km). The temp gauge's acting weird, check engine light is on, and the engine's taking forever to warm up. Mechanic I went to last time was terrible, so I'm hesitant to go back. I suspect it might be something with the cooling grille, but not sure. Has anyone experienced similar symptoms with their i8? How did you handle it and would you recommend any reliable mechanics who know their way around hybrids? Thanks in advance!

I have a 2019 BMW i4 hybrid and faced similar issues last month. The slow warm-up and temp gauge fluctuation turned out to be a faulty thermostat and a blown cooling system fuse. The check engine light was directly related to these issues. During my garage visit, they performed a diagnostic test which revealed the thermostat wasn't regulating coolant flow properly. Since it's a hybrid system, they had to check both the electric and combustion cooling circuits. The fuse was a quick fix, but the thermostat required careful handling due to the hybrid setup. It wasn't a catastrophic issue, but definitely needed immediate attention to prevent potential damage to the hybrid system. The cooling grille wasn't the problem in my case, though it's worth checking. With these symptoms, I'd suggest finding a certified hybrid specialist rather than a general mechanic.

Hey there, thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful as it sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. I'll definitely get the thermostat and cooling system checked out first. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much the repairs set you back? And has everything been running smoothly since the fix? These hybrid systems can be tricky, so just wondering if any other issues popped up afterward.

Hey again! Just wanted to update you, since my last post, I got everything sorted out and I'm happy to report my i4's running like a dream now. The cooling grille restriction they found was actually fixed during the service, and they replaced that blown fuse I mentioned (cost me 52 € for that part). Everything's been perfect since the repair, no more wonky temp readings, engine warms up normally now, and that annoying check engine light is finally gone! It's been about a month, and I haven't had a single issue pop up. The hybrid system's working exactly as it should. I know these high-tech hybrids can be a bit nerve-wracking when things go wrong, but once you get the right fix, they're solid machines. Just make sure whoever works on it knows their hybrid stuff, it makes all the difference. Trust me, getting it sorted properly the first time is worth every penny!

Thanks for the detailed follow-up! I bit the bullet and took my i8 to a certified hybrid specialist yesterday. You were right, it turned out to be a thermostat issue, plus they found a small coolant leak. Got it all fixed up, including a new fuse and proper system check. The repair wasn't cheap, but seeing how well my car's running now, it was totally worth it. The engine's warming up properly, temp gauge is steady, and that pesky check engine light is finally off. The mechanic was super thorough and actually explained everything they did, which was a refreshing change from my last experience. Learned my lesson about going to specialists for these cars. Really appreciate your help, saved me from stressing out too much about it. Best decision I've made for my car in a while!
