BMW i8 Brake Warning Signals Safety Crisis
Spongy/unresponsive brakes

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! It's really helpful to hear from someone who went through something similar. I ended up having almost exactly the same problems with my i8, the spongy pedal and warning lights were definitely nerve-wracking. Finally got it fixed up about two weeks ago. If you don't mind me asking, what did your repairs cost in the end? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix? Just wondering if any other issues popped up afterward since these hybrid braking systems can be a bit tricky.
Hey again! Great to hear you got it sorted out! Yeah, my repair bill came to 480 €, mainly for fixing those worn brakes. The brake fluid level issue got resolved too, and honestly, it was worth every penny. Everything's been running like a dream since then. The brake pedal feel is back to normal, nice and firm like it should be, no more sponginess. It's been about 6 weeks now since the fix, and I haven't had a single warning light or issue pop up. The hybrid braking system is working perfectly, you get that smooth transition between regenerative and regular braking that these cars are known for. I totally get why you were concerned. These high-tech braking systems can be intimidating when they start acting up, but once they're properly sorted, they're really reliable. Just keep an eye on your maintenance schedule, and you should be good to go. Did your mechanic mention anything about when you should schedule your next brake check?
Thanks for the follow-up! My repair cost was actually pretty similar, ended up paying around 500 € for everything. Took it to a certified BMW shop after really stressing about where to go. The mechanic was super transparent, showed me the worn brake pads and explained everything clearly. Funny story actually, when I first drove in, the car made this awful grinding noise that made me want to sink into my seat from embarrassment! But the mechanic just laughed and said he's heard much worse. He even took the time to show me what a normal brake pedal should feel like in these hybrids. Everything's been perfect since the fix. The pedal feels firm again, no more warning lights, and the braking is smooth. They recommended another check in about 20,000 km, which I've marked in my calendar. After this experience, I'm definitely not waiting until warning lights pop up again! Really appreciate all your input, helped calm my nerves about the whole situation.
Hey there! Had a similar situation with my 2019 BMW i4 Hybrid last month. When my brake warning light came on with that spongy pedal feel, I knew something wasn't right. Turned out my brake pads were seriously worn down, and there was a slow leak in one of the brake lines causing the fluid level to drop. The fix wasn't just about topping up fluid, the system needed proper bleeding, brake line replacement, and new pads. The mechanic showed me how the old pads were worn unevenly, which explained that weird pedal feel. This is definitely not something to ignore, as it's a critical safety system. Based on your mileage, you're probably due for a brake service anyway. With hybrid systems like ours, the regenerative braking can sometimes mask brake wear issues until they're pretty serious. Get it checked soon, brake problems aren't something to mess around with.
