BMW i8's CCV Woes: Hybrid Performance Issues Solved

Loss of engine power

|

Check engine light on

Has anyone dealt with a faulty CCV in their i8? Need advice! My 2020 BMW i8 hybrid (21257 km) is giving me headaches. The check engine light is on, and I'm experiencing power drops and unstable speeds. I suspect it's the crankcase ventilation valve, but I had a terrible experience with my previous mechanic. Looking for recommendations from those who've faced similar issues with their i8. What should I expect for repairs and costs?

Hi there! I can relate to your CCV problem. I had a similar issue with my 2017 BMW i4 hybrid last season. The symptoms you're describing match exactly what I experienced, power loss, inconsistent acceleration, and that annoying check engine light. The Crankcase ventilation system failure is actually quite serious since it affects oil separation and pressure regulation in the engine. When I took mine in, they had to replace the entire CCV valve assembly and some connecting hoses that had deteriorated. The repair wasn't just a quick fix, they had the car for about three days. It's critical to get it sorted quickly because a faulty CCV can lead to oil contamination and potential engine damage if left unchecked. My advice would be to take it to a certified BMW service center rather than a regular mechanic. These hybrid systems are complex, and you'll want someone who really knows what they're dealing with. Make sure they do a proper diagnosis first, sometimes similar symptoms can come from other issues in the ventilation system.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! It's really helpful to hear from someone who went through the same thing. I actually got it fixed last week and was wondering if your repair cost was similar to mine. Did you remember what you paid for the whole job? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the repair, or have you noticed any other issues pop up? I'm a bit paranoid now and keep listening for any weird noises from my i8!

Just wanted to follow up! Yeah, I remember exactly what I paid, it was 360 Euro for the whole CCV repair job. Actually cheaper than I initially feared! And I've got great news, since getting it fixed, my i4 has been running like a dream. No more power issues, no check engine lights, nothing. It's such a relief. You know how you mentioned being paranoid about noises? I was exactly the same way for the first few weeks after the repair! But honestly, you can rest easy. Once the CCV is properly fixed, it usually stays fixed. It's been over 8 months now since my repair, and I haven't had a single problem. The engine feels more responsive, and the acceleration is smooth as butter. Just keep up with your regular maintenance schedule, and you should be good to go. These hybrids are pretty solid once you sort out any initial issues. Amazing how such a small part can cause such a headache though, right? Let me know if you notice anything else unusual, but I bet you'll be just as happy with the repair as I am!

Thanks for the reassurance! You're right about the repair cost, I actually paid a bit more (450 Euro) but I guess that's because of the different model. I got it back from the shop last Tuesday, and honestly, what a difference! The mechanic I found was fantastic, super knowledgeable about hybrids. He walked me through the whole process and even showed me the old valve. The funny thing is, while I was there, I saw another BMW come in with similar issues. Got chatting with the owner in the waiting room, and we ended up swapping car stories for hours! The mechanic even gave me some tips about preventive maintenance to avoid future problems. Now my i8 runs like it's brand new again, no more strange noises or power drops. I'm still keeping an ear out, but I'm feeling much more confident about it. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it really helped me feel better about getting this sorted out!
