BMW i5 Infotainment Nightmare: Display and Audio Dead

Audio system is not working

|

Fault stored

Need advice: BMW i5 display and audio system failures Hey everyone! My 2024 BMW i5 (electric) with 180,628 km is having issues with the infotainment system. The display keeps flickering and sometimes goes completely black. The audio system is also dead, and there's an error code stored. Had a bad experience with my previous mechanic, so I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone experienced similar issues with their i5? Looking for recommendations on what could be causing this and where to get it fixed properly. Would really appreciate hearing about your experiences. Thanks!

I had a similar issue with my 2021 BMW iX3 last month. The display started flickering and eventually showed "Display defective" before going completely dark. The audio system also stopped working. Took it to a certified BMW service center where they diagnosed a faulty control module that connects the display and audio components. The main issue was a software corruption that had affected the entire iDrive system, but there was also a hardware problem with the main control unit. They had to replace the control module and perform a complete system reset and software update. It wasn't a quick fix, had the car in the shop for three days. This was definitely a serious issue since it affected all the car's essential interface functions, including navigation and safety notifications. Since the repair, everything's working perfectly again. Would strongly recommend getting it checked at an authorized BMW dealer since they have the specific diagnostic tools needed for these electrical systems. These issues typically don't resolve themselves and can get worse if left unchecked.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. Really helpful to know about the control module and software issues. Mine's been driving me crazy for the past week. Would you mind letting me know roughly how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also, has everything stayed working properly since then, or have you noticed any other quirks with the system?

Hey there again! Happy to give you an update. After getting it fixed at the BMW dealer, I ended up paying 725 € for the whole repair job, that covered both the control module replacement and the software work. It was a bit steep, but honestly worth every penny considering how crucial the infotainment system is these days. The best news is that everything has been working absolutely flawlessly since the repair. The display is crystal clear now, no more flickering or black screens, and the audio system is back to its premium sound quality. It's been about six weeks since the fix, and I haven't noticed a single problem or weird behavior from the system. Actually, the audio quality seems even better than before, maybe because they updated the software during the repair. Really glad I didn't wait any longer to get it sorted. If you're experiencing the same issues, I'd definitely recommend getting it checked out soon. These electrical gremlins tend to get more complicated if you leave them too long. Hope this helps with your decision! Let me know if you need any other details about the repair process.

Thanks for all the detailed info! I bit the bullet and took my i5 to the dealer yesterday. You were totally right, it was the control module causing all the trouble. The mechanic found some water damage that had messed with the connections, probably from that time I left my sunroof slightly open during a rain shower (totally my fault!). The repair set me back about 800 € with parts and labor, but honestly, it was worth every penny. The whole system's working like new again, crisp display, perfect audio, and no more unusual shutdowns. They even threw in a free software update that added some neat features I didn't have before. Funny enough, the mechanic turned out to be super helpful, not at all like my last experience. He showed me exactly what was wrong and explained everything they did to fix it. Really glad I followed your advice instead of trying to find a cheaper alternative. Thanks again for pushing me in the right direction. Now I can finally enjoy my podcasts without the system going dead mid-episode!
