BMW i5 Electric Fan Causing Dangerous Overheating?

Overheating

Hey all! My 2024 BMW i5 (151,848 KM) has been giving me some trouble lately. The engine keeps overheating and running in emergency mode. I suspect it might be the electric fan, but after a previous bad experience with a mechanic, I'm hesitant to just take it in. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their i5? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost? Would really appreciate some insights before choosing where to take it. Thanks!

Had a similar issue with my 2021 BMW iX3 last month. The overheating and emergency mode symptoms matched exactly what you're describing. At the garage, they found that the high-voltage coolant pump had a faulty wiring connection, which was causing the cooling system to malfunction. This was impacting the battery temperature management system. The fix involved replacing the damaged wiring harness and checking all related connectors. It wasn't just a simple cable replacement, they had to do a full diagnostic of the cooling system to ensure no other components were affected. This was definitely a serious issue that needed immediate attention since continuous overheating could potentially damage the battery system. If you're seeing these symptoms, don't wait too long to get it checked. The emergency mode is actually a protective measure to prevent serious damage. Look for a certified EV technician who specializes in BMW electric vehicles. They'll have the right diagnostic tools to properly identify the issue.

Thanks for sharing that detailed experience with your iX3! Those symptoms do sound identical to what I'm experiencing. I'm relieved to hear you got it sorted out. Would you mind sharing what the final repair cost was? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other quirks pop up? Asking because I want to make sure I budget properly and know what to expect. Really appreciate your help with this!

Hey there! Glad to follow up about my iX3 situation. Since you asked, yes, everything's been running perfectly smooth after the repair! The electric fan issue was exactly what was causing all that trouble, and fixing the faulty cable connection sorted it right out. Ended up costing me 95 € for the repair, which honestly wasn't as bad as I initially feared. Haven't noticed a single problem since the fix, no more overheating, no emergency mode warnings, nothing. The car's been performing just like new. The mechanic mentioned it was actually a pretty straightforward fix once they pinpointed the exact problem with the fan's wiring. Just make sure you get it checked soon, putting it off could lead to bigger problems down the road. For what it's worth, the peace of mind knowing it's properly fixed was totally worth the repair cost. Let me know how it goes when you get yours looked at!

Thanks for all the help! Just wanted to update you, I took your advice and got my i5 checked out today. Turns out it wasn't the electric fan after all, but rather a faulty temperature sensor that was sending wrong signals to the system. The mechanic I found was really thorough and explained everything clearly. The repair was actually cheaper than what you paid, just 75 € for the sensor replacement and diagnostic work. They got it done in about two hours, and I've already taken it for a test drive. No more emergency mode warnings, and the temperature gauge is staying exactly where it should be. Really glad I didn't put this off any longer. The mechanic mentioned that if I'd waited, it could've caused problems with other components. Thanks again for encouraging me to get it checked out quickly, you helped me avoid what could've been a much bigger headache!

Let our mechanics help you!
