BMW i4 Windows Dead: Electrical Issue or Bad Regulator?

Power windows malfunction

Hey everyone! Having trouble with my 2021 BMW i4 (172,955 km). The power windows completely stopped working and there's an error code stored in the system. Did anyone experience similar issues with window regulators on their i4? I got burned by a mechanic recently, so I'm a bit hesitant about where to take it. Would appreciate hearing about your experiences and recommendations for fixing this issue. Thanks in advance

Hey there! Had the same problem with my 2018 BMW iX3 last winter. The power windows stopped responding completely, all four of them. Got the error code read at the garage, and it turned out the main driver's side window switch module was defective. The moisture had gotten into the switch assembly and corroded the contacts. Initially thought it was the window regulator, but thankfully it was just the switch module that needed replacement. Not a serious issue, but it did require a BMW-specific diagnostic tool to program the new switch module to work with the car's system. The repair took about two hours at the shop. Since you're at 172k km, it's a common wear point for these switches. My suggestion would be to have a certified BMW technician diagnose it first before replacing any parts. The fix was pretty straightforward in my case. Good luck with the repair.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My problem sounds exactly the same, all windows completely dead. Really glad to hear it was just the switch module and not something more serious. Was thinking about going to my local BMW specialist tomorrow to get it checked out. By the way, how much did you end up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything been working fine since they fixed it? Been burned before so trying to make sure I'm not overpaying or missing anything important.

Hey again! Just wanted to follow up, since you asked about the costs and how it went. I got my window issues sorted out and I'm happy to report everything's working perfectly now. Turned out it was actually a faulty window regulator, not just the switch module like I initially thought. The mechanic fixed it last month and I haven't had a single problem since. The total bill came to 200 € for replacing the power window switch that was causing all the trouble. Honestly, it was worth every penny, no more struggling with dead windows! The repair was pretty quick too, and they even did a full system check to make sure nothing else was acting up. I totally get being cautious after getting burned before. But yeah, everything's been smooth sailing since the fix, all four windows working like new again. If your issue is similar to what mine was, you should be back on track pretty quickly once they diagnose and fix it. Hope this helps with your decision! Let us know how it goes at the BMW specialist.

Thanks for the detailed follow-up! Just got back from the mechanic today and wanted to share my experience. Turned out you were right about getting it properly diagnosed first. The problem was actually simpler than I expected, just some damaged wiring in the door harness that was causing the whole system to fail. Ended up paying 150 € for the repair, which included fixing the wiring and running a full diagnostic check. Much better than I feared, considering I was worried about having to replace the entire window system! The mechanic was really transparent about everything and even showed me the damaged wiring. Everything's working perfectly now, all windows go up and down smoothly. Really glad I didn't put this off any longer. And honestly, what a relief to find an honest mechanic after my last bad experience. Won't be so nervous about taking my car in next time something comes up. Really appreciate everyone's help and advice on this. It definitely made me feel more confident about getting it fixed!
