BMW i4 Washer System Failure: Causes and Solutions

Headlight cleaning system without function

Hey everyone! My 2021 BMW i4's windshield washer system suddenly stopped working. The pump isn't responding and I'm getting an error message on the dashboard. While the low washer fluid warning is showing, I've already checked and topped up the fluid but nothing changed. Has anyone dealt with this issue before? What did your workshop diagnose and how was it fixed? Would really appreciate hearing about your experiences and repair solutions.

Hey there! I have some experience with EVs and had a similar issue with my 2019 BMW iX3 (also own an i3). The exact same thing happened to me, warning light and no response from the washer system. I checked the fluid level, but that wasn't the problem even though the warning persisted. Turned out the fluid level sensor was acting up. My workshop cleaned the sensor contacts and recalibrated it. Quick 30-minute job, cost me 25 Euro. Everything's been working perfectly since then. Could you share what error message you're getting exactly? Also, when you filled up the washer fluid, did you notice any unusual smells or leaks around the reservoir? This info would help figure out if you're dealing with the same sensor issue I had.

Thanks for sharing that! Yeah, I've got 22474 KM on my i4 since my last service and was worried it might be something major. I also noticed the same thing, no leaks or weird smells around the reservoir. Getting the same persistent warning despite topping up the fluid. Your sensor fix sounds promising and way less expensive than I feared. Did you need to book an appointment specifically for this issue, or did they handle it during your regular service? Really hoping it's just the sensor contacts like in your case.

Hey again! Glad I could help ease your mind a bit. Actually, in my case, I noticed the issue about 2 months before my scheduled service (I was at around 24000 KM back then), but I decided to get it checked right away since I do quite a bit of highway driving and really rely on my washers. I just called the workshop and explained the symptoms, they fit me in the next day since it was a quick fix. Honestly, I'd recommend getting it looked at sooner rather than later. Even though it was the same sensor issue I mentioned, leaving it unchecked could potentially lead to more problems. The warning light can be pretty annoying too! The technician showed me the sensor contacts after cleaning them, they were a bit corroded, which apparently isn't uncommon in these models. Since you're describing identical symptoms and your mileage is similar, I'm pretty confident you're dealing with the same thing. Just one tip, when you take it in, mention you'd like them to check the pump as well, just to be on the safe side. They did that for me without charging extra. Better to have everything checked while they're at it!

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! You're right about getting it checked soon, I don't want to risk any bigger issues developing. I'll call the workshop tomorrow morning and see if they can squeeze me in this week. Really appreciate the tip about asking them to check the pump too. It's such a relief knowing this is likely just a sensor issue and not something major with the system. The similarities between our cases are pretty striking, same symptoms, similar mileage, and that persistent warning. I was getting worried about possible damage to the washer system, but hearing about your experience has put my mind at ease. I'll update the thread once I get it sorted out. Thanks again for your help!
