BMW i4 Door Lock System Failure Driving Owners Crazy

Vehicle cannot be unlocked or locked

Hi all! Having trouble with my 2021 BMW i4 (44k km) and need some advice. The door locking system is acting up, can't lock/unlock properly, getting door open warnings, and the auto-lock while driving doesn't work anymore. Pretty sure it's the door contact sensor, but after a bad experience with my last mechanic, I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar door lock issues on their i4? Would love to hear your experiences and recommendations for fixing this problem. Thanks!

I had a similar issue with my 2018 BMW iX3 last month. The door locking system started acting erratic, same symptoms as yours. Took it to the garage, and they diagnosed a faulty wiring connection in the door contact sensor area. Turned out several cable connectors had corroded, causing intermittent electrical signals. The technician had to replace the entire door contact sensor module and rewire some connections. The repair wasn't too complex, but accessing the components inside the door panel was quite tricky. It wasn't a serious mechanical issue, more of an electrical annoyance that needed proper attention. My suggestion would be to have it checked soon, as faulty door locks can become a safety concern. The repair took about half a day at the shop.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the door sensor issue. It's really helpful to know that it was just a corroded wiring problem, sounds similar to what I'm dealing with. My car's been acting exactly the same way. Do you remember roughly how much the repair cost you? Also, has everything been working smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other quirks?

Hey there! Happy to give you an update. After getting it fixed, my iX3's door system has been working perfectly, no more unusual warnings or locking issues. Such a relief! The total bill came to 95 € for fixing the faulty cable connection in the door contact sensor. They basically found a damaged wire and plug that was causing all those annoying symptoms. Money well spent considering how frustrating those door problems were. It's been about five weeks since the repair, and I haven't had a single issue. The auto-lock works properly again, and those irritating door contact warnings are completely gone. The car feels like new in that regard. Trust me, getting it sorted was definitely worth it. Those door sensor problems can really drive you crazy when they're acting up! Let me know if you need any other details about the repair.

Just wanted to update everyone, I finally got my i4's door issues fixed! After reading about your experience, I took it to a mechanic last week. Turned out you were spot on, it was indeed a wiring problem with the door sensor. The repair was actually quicker than I expected. The mechanic found some damaged wiring and a worn-out connector that was causing all the trouble. Theyaged to fix everything in about three hours. Cost me a bit more than yours, around 120 €, but honestly, it's such a relief having it working properly again. No more unusual warnings popping up on my dashboard, and the auto-lock feature works perfectly now. It's amazing how such a small electrical issue can cause so much frustration! Thanks again for sharing your experience, it really helped me understand what I was dealing with and gave me confidence to get it sorted. Case closed on this door drama!
