Check engine light on

|

Overheating

Having issues with my 2022 BMW 4 Electric, active air flap problem suspected. Check engine light is on, getting error messages, and engine's running hot. Has anyone dealt with this before? Looking for repair experiences and workshop solutions. Any tips on diagnosis would help too.

Hi there! I had a similar issue with my 2020 BMW i4 (I also own a BMW iX3). I've got some experience working with EVs, but I'd still consider myself at a low experience level. My active air flap was acting up too, got those annoying error messages and temperature warnings. Took it to my regular workshop and they diagnosed a faulty electromechanism in the air flap system. The repair set me back 590 Euro, but it fixed the problem completely. No more warnings since then. What's your exact model spec and mileage? That would help me share more relevant details about my experience. Also, have you noticed any specific patterns when the warnings appear? Hope this helps! Let me know if you need more info.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I've got a 2022 BMW i4 with 108137 KM on the clock. The warnings started popping up pretty out of nowhere, but I've noticed they seem to happen more during longer drives. The engine temp isn't crazy high but definitely above normal. I had my last service done at 100K, and everything was fine then. The repair cost you mentioned isn't as bad as I feared, was worried it might be something more serious. Did your workshop mention how long the repair typically takes? Just trying to figure out if I need to arrange alternative transport. Would appreciate any other details about the repair process you remember!

Hey again! Yeah, I totally get what you're dealing with, those unusual warnings can be super annoying. Since we've got the same model (my 2020 i4), I can tell you more about my repair experience. The repair actually didn't take too long, my workshop had it done in about 4-5 hours. I dropped it off in the morning and picked it up after lunch. The main time was spent on diagnostics to make sure it was definitely the air flap and not something else. One thing I didn't mention before, before I got it fixed, I also noticed the temperature issues were worse on longer drives, just like you're experiencing. The mechanic explained that when the air flap gets stuck, it messes with the airflow to the engine, which explains the temp increase during extended driving. They had to replace the entire flap control unit in my case, not just repair it. But honestly, it was worth it, the car's been running perfectly since then, and my fuel efficiency actually improved a bit too. Quick tip, might be worth checking if your warranty still covers this. I had to pay because mine was out, but yours being a 2022 model might still be under warranty.

Thanks so much for all these details, really helpful! That's a relief about the repair time. I'll definitely check about the warranty coverage first, good thinking there. My car's still pretty new so fingers crossed it's covered. It's reassuring to hear your car's running perfectly after the fix. The similar symptoms, especially about the temperature issues on longer drives, makes me pretty confident it's the same problem. I'll get it booked in as soon as possible, don't want to risk any engine damage from running hot. Good to know about the improved fuel efficiency too, that's an unexpected bonus! I'll keep you posted about how it goes with my repair. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience!
