Thanks for sharing your experience! This is really helpful. The symptoms you described sound spot on with what I'm experiencing. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the fix, or have you noticed any other transmission-related issues?

Hey again! Happy to update you! Since getting my i8's transmission control unit fixed, it's been running like a dream, absolutely no issues whatsoever. The repair cost me 1000 € total, which included the new TCU and programming. Might seem steep, but considering it fixed all those annoying problems, it was worth every penny. It's such a relief not dealing with those grinding noises and rough shifts anymore. The paddles respond perfectly now, and the whole driving experience is back to being smooth and enjoyable. My mechanic really knew what they were doing with the hybrid system, which made all the difference. If you're experiencing the same symptoms, I'd say don't wait too long to get it fixed. The longer you delay, the more risky it gets for your transmission. I'm really glad I bit the bullet and got it sorted when I did. Let me know if you have any other questions, happy to help!

Thanks so much for all the detailed info! You convinced me to get it checked out right away. Actually, just got back from the mechanic today. Turns out you were absolutely right, it was the transmission control unit. Found a certified BMW technician who specializes in hybrids. Got really lucky because they had the part in stock, so the whole thing only took two days. Ended up paying slightly more than you did, but the car's running perfectly now. No more grinding noises, and the gear shifts are smooth as butter. It's such a relief to have this fixed. Was honestly worried it might've been something even more serious. Driving home today felt like I had a completely different car, in a good way! Really appreciate you sharing your experience. It helped me make the right decision instead of putting it off and potentially causing more damage. Thanks again for all your help!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2017 BMW i8 Hybrid last winter. The symptoms matched yours exactly, unresponsive paddles, rough shifting, and that awful grinding noise. My transmission control unit was indeed defective and needed replacement. Initially, my mechanic tried resetting the control unit, but that was just a temporary fix. The real problem was much more serious, internal circuit board failure in the TCU. The unit had to be completely replaced and reprogrammed to work with the car's systems. The whole repair process took about 4 days, mainly because they had to order the part. I'd definitely classify this as a serious repair since the transmission control unit is crucial for the hybrid system to function properly. If left unfixed, it could lead to complete transmission failure. Make sure whoever works on it is certified for BMW hybrid systems. They'll need specific diagnostic tools to properly program the new unit. Based on your symptoms, I'm pretty confident you're dealing with the same issue I had. Best of luck with the repair.
