BMW i3 Temperature Chaos: Cooling System Mystery Unfolds

The display in the speedometer shows an incorrect temperature

Check engine light on

The engine takes considerably longer to reach operating temperature

Hi all! Having some concerning issues with my 2016 BMW i3 Hybrid (20,402 KM). The dashboard temperature readings are acting up, engine's taking forever to warm up, and the check engine light is on. I think it might be something with the cooling grille, but after a bad experience with my last mechanic, I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their i3? Would appreciate hearing about your experiences and trusted mechanic recommendations. Thanks!

I had very similar issues with my 2019 BMW i8 Hybrid last winter. The temperature gauge was fluctuating wildly and the engine warm-up time was unusually long. Turned out it wasn't the cooling grille, it was actually a faulty coolant temperature sensor and a blown fuse in the thermal management system. The repair wasn't too complex, but it definitely needed attention right away to prevent any potential damage to the hybrid system. The mechanic mentioned that these symptoms are somewhat common in BMW hybrids when the temperature sensor starts failing. Had to leave my car at the garage for a day, they replaced the sensor, fixed the fuse issue, and did a full diagnostic check of the cooling system. Not a major repair, but definitely something you want to address soon to avoid bigger problems down the line. Based on your symptoms, I'd get it checked out asap. Those temperature irregularities can be a warning sign for more serious issues if left unchecked.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! That sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. It's actually quite reassuring to hear someone else had the same problem and got it sorted. Do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the sensor replacement and fuse fix? Also, has everything been running smoothly since the repair? Just want to know what I might be in for.

Hey there! Happy to help with more details. After getting it fixed last time, my i8 has been running like a dream. The fuse replacement cost me 52€, but I actually didn't need the sensor replacement, turned out the main issue was just the cooling grille being restricted, which they cleared up. They did a thorough check of everything while they had it, and since then, the temperature readings have been spot-on and warm-up time is back to normal. I know how nerve-wracking these issues can be, especially with these high-tech hybrids, but it was definitely worth getting it sorted. No temperature fluctuations or warning lights since then, and it's been several months now. The engine's performing great, warming up properly like it should. If your symptoms are similar to what mine were, you might be looking at a pretty straightforward fix too. Just make sure you get it checked soon, these things can snowball if left too long. Let me know how it goes when you get it sorted!

Just wanted to update everyone on what happened with my i3. Finally got the courage to take it to a mechanic last week. Turns out you were right about getting it checked quickly! The mechanic found that my temperature sensor was acting up, plus there was some gunk blocking the cooling system. The whole thing cost me about 200 bucks, not as bad as I'd feared. They sorted it out in a few hours, cleaned everything up, and ran some tests. The car's running so much better now, no more weird temperature readings, and the engine warms up normally. The check engine light's gone too, which is a huge relief. Actually ended up really liking this new mechanic. They explained everything clearly and didn't try to upsell me on stuff I didn't need. Guess sometimes these car problems turn out to be a blessing in disguise, now I've finally found a trustworthy mechanic! Thanks again for pushing me to get it checked out. You probably saved me from bigger problems down the road!

Let our mechanics help you!
