BMW i3 Oil & Speed Warning Lights, Help Needed!

Hey fellow BMW i3 owners, having issues with my 2020 i3 Hybrid. The speedometer warning light and oil pressure warning are both on. I suspect it might be contaminated engine oil, but I'd like to hear from others who've dealt with similar symptoms. Did you get it fixed? What was the actual problem and how did your mechanic resolve it? Any repair costs and timeframes would be helpful too. Thanks in advance for your insights!

Hey there! I've got some experience with similar issues on my 2018 BMW i8 Hybrid. I'd say I have moderate experience with car maintenance. I faced almost identical warning lights last year. My workshop discovered it was simply due to me going way past the scheduled maintenance interval. The oil had degraded pretty badly and needed immediate attention. Got a full oil change service done, and they also checked the sensors since false warnings can pop up with old oil. Cost me around 165 Euro and took about 2 hours. Since you've got a newer i3, could you share: Current mileage? When was your last oil change? Are you noticing any unusual engine sounds? This info would help determine if you're dealing with the same issue. These BMWs are sensitive about their maintenance schedules, so it's worth checking your service history first.

Thanks for your detailed reply! My i3 has 115,548 KM on the clock, and I just had my service done last month. No weird engine sounds at all, which makes these warning lights even more puzzling. The service records are all up to date, so I'm a bit concerned it might be something else. Could there be an issue with the sensors themselves? By the way, did your warning lights come on suddenly or gradually? I'm wondering if I should take it to the dealer or if a regular BMW specialist would be able to handle this.

Hey again! Thanks for the follow-up about your i3. Based on what you're saying about recent service and no strange sounds, I'm starting to think this might be different from what I experienced with my i8. In my case, the warning lights came on gradually over a few days, first flickering, then staying on constantly. But since you've just had service done and your mileage isn't crazy high, I'm leaning towards a sensor issue rather than an actual oil problem. After dealing with my own BMW quirks, I've learned these cars can sometimes throw false warnings due to faulty sensors. Had a similar situation last winter actually, turned out the oil pressure sensor itself was going bad, not the oil. That was a much quicker fix than my previous oil contamination problem. Any BMW specialist should be able to diagnose this, they all have the right diagnostic tools. My regular indie BMW guy handled my sensor replacement just fine, and it was way cheaper than the dealer. Just make sure they're familiar with hybrids. Mind keeping us posted on what you find out? Always good to know what these warnings actually mean for future reference!

Thanks so much for all that great info! You've actually made me feel a lot better about this situation. I've just booked an appointment with a local BMW specialist for tomorrow morning, they seemed pretty confident about handling hybrid diagnostics when I called them. The fact that your warning lights came on gradually while mine just popped up suddenly does make me think it could be sensor-related rather than an actual oil issue. I'll definitely update the thread once I get the car checked out. Really appreciate you sharing your experiences, it's helped me narrow down what to expect and saved me some unnecessary stress about potential major problems. Fingers crossed it's just a sensor playing up like in your winter case. The funny thing is, I was about to cancel my plans for the weekend thinking it was something super serious, but now I'm feeling much more optimistic about a quick fix!
