BMW i3 Key Fob Issues Causing Multiple Warning Alerts

Key fob issues

Hey all! Having some trouble with my 2013 BMW i3 Hybrid (101,690 km). The keyless entry stopped working and I'm getting warning messages on the dash. Scanner shows there's an error stored in the system. Pretty sure it might be a low key battery issue. Had a not-so-great experience with my previous mechanic, so I'm wondering if anyone else has dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear your experiences and recommendations before I take it in somewhere. Thanks in advance for any insights!

Hey there! I faced the exact same issue with my 2016 BMW i8 Hybrid last month. The key fob battery was indeed dead, but there was also a problem with the key fob antenna that was causing intermittent connection issues with the car's security system. Had it checked at the garage, they first replaced the CR2032 battery in the key fob, but the warning messages persisted. Further diagnosis revealed the antenna in the key fob had loose connections. The technician had to resolder the antenna contacts and reprogram the key to sync with the car. Not a major repair, but definitely needed professional attention since it involved the car's security system. The whole thing took about two hours to fix. Haven't had any issues since then, keyless entry works perfectly now and all warning messages are gone. Hope this helps with your situation. Better to get it checked soon since it's related to your car's security system.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! Really helpful to hear about a similar case. My symptoms sound exactly like what you described. I'm definitely going to have it checked out properly now, knowing it could be more than just a simple battery issue. Would you mind sharing how much the repair cost you? Also, curious to know if you've had any other electronic gremlins pop up since they fixed it?

Happy to help! Just wanted to update you, my repair was actually quite straightforward compared to what I initially thought. While I mentioned both the antenna and battery issues earlier, when I took it to the mechanic, it turned out to be just the key battery that needed replacing. Total cost was 37 €, this included the new battery and programming work. Since getting it fixed, everything's been working perfectly, no more "Key battery low" warnings on the dash, and the keyless entry is as smooth as when the car was new. None of those electronic gremlins have shown up either, which is a relief! My advice would be to get it checked soon, it's a relatively quick and inexpensive fix if it's just the battery like mine turned out to be. The peace of mind is worth it, especially since it affects the security system. Let me know how it goes when you get yours sorted!

Thanks again for all the detailed info! Just wanted to update you on what happened with my car. Finally took it to a mechanic yesterday, turns out it was a bit more complicated than yours. They found the key battery was dead, but there was also a faulty sensor in the door handle causing problems with the keyless system. The repair took about three hours total. Had to get both issues fixed since they were connected, you can't ignore one without affecting the other, apparently. Bill came to a bit more than yours, but at least it's all sorted now. The car starts perfectly, and the keyless entry is working like a charm again. Really grateful for your advice about getting it checked quickly. You were right about the peace of mind thing, feels great not seeing those warning messages on the dash anymore! Thanks again for all your help!
