BMW i3 Belt-Handover System Failure Repair Help Needed

Seatbelt carrier problem

Hey there! Having some trouble with my 2015 BMW i3 Hybrid (98,500 km) and could use some advice. The belt-handover system stopped working and there's an error code for the seat belt-handover in the system. I suspect it might be a faulty belt tensioner. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm looking for recommendations from other i3 owners who've dealt with similar issues. Anyone had this problem before? What was the actual cause and roughly how much did the repair cost? Thanks in advance!

I had the exact same issue with my 2018 BMW i8 Hybrid last month. The belt handover malfunction is actually quite serious since it's a critical safety feature. In my case, the problem wasn't just the tensioner, turned out the entire belt bringer mechanism was defective and needed replacement. The servo motor that controls the handover movement had failed, and there was also some damage to the wiring harness. The repair required removing parts of the interior trim and seat to access the system properly. Took the technicians about 4 hours to complete the job. They also had to recalibrate the system afterward to ensure proper functionality. While it was inconvenient, I wouldn't risk driving without getting it fixed. The belt handover system is designed to ensure proper restraint positioning, which is crucial in case of an accident. Better to address it sooner rather than later.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the belt handover system! That's really helpful information. I'm going to get mine checked out this week. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the full repair? Also, has everything been working smoothly since you got it fixed? My servos are making some weird noises too, so I'm wondering if I should get those looked at while it's in the shop.

Hey again! Just wanted to follow up about the repair cost, I paid 455 € to get the defective belt bringer/handover fixed. It was mainly the bad belt tensioner causing all the trouble, and I'm happy to report everything's working perfectly now. The weird servo noises completely disappeared after they replaced it. It's been about a month since the repair, and the belt handover system is working like new, smooth and quiet, just as it should be. If you're hearing strange noises from your servos, definitely get them checked while they're working on the system. It could be related to the same issue, and it's better to fix everything at once rather than making multiple trips to the shop. The mechanics did a great job, and I'm actually glad I didn't wait any longer to get it fixed. The peace of mind knowing the safety system is working properly is worth every penny. Let me know how your repair goes!

Just got back from the mechanic, and wow, what a relief! Turns out you were spot on about the servo motor being part of the problem. The mechanic found both the tensioner and servo were shot, just like in your case. Cost me a bit more than yours though, around 600 for the whole job since they had to replace both parts. They also noticed some worn wiring while they were in there, so I'm glad I took it in when I did. Could've been a bigger headache down the road. The car feels so much better now, no more weird noises, and the belt handover is working smoothly again. Thanks again for your help! Really glad I didn't just ignore those warning signs. Nothing beats having a properly working safety system. Money well spent, if you ask me.

Let our mechanics help you!
