A/C System Not Engaging

Hi all, my 2015 BMW i3 hybrid has been acting up lately. The AC isn't working at all, no cooling, won't even turn on. There's a warning light in the speedo and an error code stored. I suspect it might be the refrigerant compressor, but I'd like to hear from others who've dealt with similar issues. Has anyone experienced this and gotten it fixed? What did your workshop find and how did they resolve it? Looking for your real-world experiences to help narrow down the problem.

Hey there! I have some experience working on cars and had a similar issue with my 2017 BMW i8 (I also owned an i4 before). Had the exact same symptoms, AC completely dead, warning light, the works. Took it to my trusted workshop and turns out it was the AC control unit that gave up. Not cheap at all, paid 980 Euro for the whole fix, including parts and labor. The techs basically had to replace the entire control module as it couldn't be repaired. They said these units can fail due to electronic issues or moisture damage. Once they swapped it out, everything worked perfectly again. Can you tell me if you're getting any specific error codes? Also, does your AC fan blow at all, even if just hot air? This info would help determine if you're dealing with the same issue I had. The symptoms sound really similar, but knowing more details would help confirm if it's the control unit or something else.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Mine's at 155161 KM and just had its service last month. I'm getting error code E-5789 and yes, there's absolutely no fan action at all, completely dead like yours was. Really hoping it's not the control unit because that repair cost sounds painful! Did you notice any weird sounds or behavior before it completely failed? I'm wondering if I missed any warning signs that could have helped catch this earlier.

Hey again! Yeah, looking at your error code and symptoms, it's definitely similar to what I experienced with my i8. Before my AC completely died, I actually noticed a few warning signs that I initially ignored (my bad!). About two weeks before the total failure, I started hearing this faint clicking sound when pressing the AC button, and sometimes the system would work fine for a few minutes, then suddenly cut out. The no-fan situation and that specific error code are exactly what I dealt with. Since you mentioned your mileage, mine was around 148000 KM when it failed, so pretty close to yours. One thing I learned from my experience, these control units typically start acting up around this mileage point. Quick tip though, before you rush to replace the control unit, have them check the fuses and electrical connections first. I actually wish I had done that before jumping straight to the expensive repair. While it turned out I really did need the new control unit, it's worth checking the basics first. Could save you a bunch of money if it turns out to be something simpler. By the way, how's the rest of your electrical system working? Any other quirks with the infotainment or dashboard? Just curious because in my case, the AC failure was the first sign of some electrical gremlins that needed sorting out.

Thanks so much for all those details! You've actually made me feel a bit better about the whole situation, at least I know I'm not alone with this issue. Come to think of it, I did notice that clicking sound you mentioned about a week ago, but didn't think much of it at the time. My infotainment system has been a bit glitchy lately too, sometimes takes forever to boot up. I'll definitely have them check the fuses and connections first before jumping into replacing the control unit. Really appreciate that tip, could save me a fortune if it turns out to be something simple! I've got an appointment with my mechanic tomorrow morning, and I'll make sure to mention everything we've discussed here. I'll probably need to start saving up though, just in case it does turn out to be the control unit. Thanks again for sharing your experience. It's been super helpful knowing exactly what to expect and what to ask the mechanic to check. I'll definitely keep an eye out for any other electrical issues too, since you mentioned that. Hope I can get this sorted without breaking the bank!

Let our mechanics help you!
