BMW Fuel Door Glitch Causes Multiple System Failures

Fault stored

|

Locking or unlocking the fuel filler flap is no longer possible

|

Some functions of the vehicle are not available

Hi all! Got some concerns with my 2015 BMW 6 (176K km, gas engine). The fuel door won't lock or unlock anymore, and I'm getting error messages. Some vehicle functions have stopped working too. Has anyone dealt with this before? Looking for suggestions before taking it to the shop, as my last mechanic visit wasn't great. What should I look out for when getting this fixed? Thanks in advance for any help!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2012 BMW 5-series last winter. The symptoms were nearly identical, fuel door issues and multiple error messages. Turned out to be a faulty central locking system linkage. The mechanic found that moisture had corroded some connections, and the linkage mechanism was stuck. The repair needed replacement of the fuel door actuator and some wiring work. It wasn't a quick fix, but not a major mechanical issue either. Important to get it sorted though, as these electrical gremlins can cascade into other systems. My advice: make sure they check the entire central locking system, not just the fuel door. Also, have them scan for any stored error codes. My mechanic found three related issues that weren't immediately obvious. Hope this helps with your decision.

Hey, thanks so much for sharing that info about your BMW's fuel door problem! My car ended up having the exact same issue with the central locking system. I'm really curious, do you remember roughly how much you paid for the repairs? And has everything been working smoothly since they fixed it, or have you noticed any other quirks popping up? Would be super helpful to know what I might expect down the road.

Hey again! Glad to help! Yeah, after getting it fixed at the shop, my fuel door has been working perfectly fine, no more issues at all. The repair cost me around 210 € for fixing the defective linkage, which honestly wasn't as bad as I was expecting. The mechanic did a thorough job with the central locking system. It's been about a year now, and everything's still working great. No other problems have shown up, the error messages disappeared completely and all the other vehicle functions went back to normal. Honestly, once they sort out that linkage issue, you shouldn't have any more troubles with it. These BMWs are pretty solid once you address the root cause. Just make sure they properly check all the connections while they're at it, that's what made the difference in my case. Let me know if anything else comes up, always happy to share my experience with these cars!

Thanks for all that detailed info! I actually just got back from the mechanic today. Turns out you were spot on about the central locking system. Had to shell out a bit more than you did, around 300 €, since they found some additional corroded wiring that needed replacing. The mechanic was way better than my last one. They walked me through everything they were doing and even showed me the old parts. Really felt like I got my money's worth this time. They ran a full diagnostic scan afterward, and all those pesky error messages are gone now. Been driving it for a few hours since the repair, and everything's working perfectly, fuel door, central locking, the works. Such a relief to have it sorted! Really appreciate you sharing your experience. It helped me know what to expect and made me feel more confident about getting it fixed. Thanks again for helping out!
