BMW Battery Warning Signs, How Much to Fix?

Weak battery when starting the engine

|

Dim or flickering lights

Hi all! Got some worrying battery issues with my 2016 BMW 1 (193k km, gasoline). My onboard computer keeps showing battery warnings, and I'm having trouble starting the engine. The lights are also dim and flickering. I suspect it might be a faulty battery sensor, but had some sketchy experiences with mechanics lately. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What was the actual problem and what did it cost to fix? Would appreciate any insights from your experiences. Thanks!

Hey there! I experienced almost identical issues with my 2019 BMW 2 Series last winter. The symptoms were exactly like yours, battery warnings, difficult starts, and dimming lights. Initially thought it was just an old battery, but the diagnostic showed a defective battery sensor. Had it checked at the garage where they confirmed the intelligent battery sensor (IBS) was failing to properly communicate with the car's computer. This caused incorrect readings and charging issues. In my case, they had to replace both the sensor and the battery since the faulty sensor had led to improper charging cycles, which damaged the battery. It's actually a critical repair because a malfunctioning sensor can leave you stranded or cause other electrical issues. The fix isn't too complex, took about two hours total at the shop. Make sure they do a full electrical system test before and after the repair to confirm everything's working properly. Hope this helps with your decision!

Hey again! Just wanted to follow up on your BMW battery issue since it was so similar to mine. How did it turn out? Do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the fix? Also curious if you've had any other electrical gremlins pop up since the repair. My car's been running smoothly after the sensor and battery replacement, but always good to know what to watch out for with these systems. Let me know!

Hey there! Thanks for checking back! Happy to report that since getting it fixed, my BMW 2 Series has been running perfectly fine, no more electrical issues at all. The repair was actually pretty straightforward and cost me 315 € for the battery sensor replacement. Turns out I was lucky because my battery was still in good shape, so I didn't need to replace that. It's been about 8 months now since the fix, and I haven't seen any warning lights or experienced any starting problems. The lights are all bright and steady, and the car starts like a charm every time. The mechanic did a thorough job testing everything, which probably helped catch any potential problems before they could develop. I know exactly what you mean about being worried about future issues, I was too! But honestly, once they sorted out that faulty sensor, everything else in the electrical system has been working perfectly. Seems like these BMWs are pretty solid once you get the sensor system working properly. Really glad to hear your car's running well after the repairs too! Keep an eye on it, but I'd say you can relax, sounds like we both got the right fix.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience! I actually just got back from the mechanic yesterday. My situation turned out a bit pricier, had to shell out for both the sensor and a new battery. The total came to around 600, but at least the car's running perfectly now. Funny story, when I got to the shop, my car barely started. The mechanic just shook his head and said, "Classic BMW sensor issue." He showed me how the old sensor was completely fried and had been sending wrong signals to the computer. No wonder my car was acting up! The whole repair took about three hours, but they gave me a detailed report of everything they checked. Really thorough job. The difference is like night and day, strong starts, bright lights, and no more annoying warning messages on the dashboard. Really appreciate your help earlier. It gave me the confidence to get it checked out before I ended up stranded somewhere. Crossing fingers for no more electrical gremlins!

Let our mechanics help you!
