BMW Alarm Dead? Backup Battery Might Be the Culprit

Alarm system malfunctions

|

Fault stored

Hey all! Having troubles with my 2013 BMW 2 diesel (130k km). The alarm system completely stopped working and won't arm when locking the car. Checked the error codes and seems like it might be the backup battery for the alarm system. Had a not-so-great experience with my previous mechanic, so I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar alarm system issues? Would love to hear your experiences and recommendations for fixing this problem. Thanks in advance!

Had the exact same issue with my 2016 BMW 3 Series diesel last month. The backup battery was completely dead after years of use, causing the alarm system to fail. It's a pretty common issue in these models when they age. Took it to the garage and they confirmed the backup battery was the culprit. The battery sits in a small compartment and powers the alarm when the main battery is disconnected. It's not a major repair, they replaced the backup unit and recoded the alarm system. The whole thing took about an hour. Important to note that driving with a failed alarm battery isn't dangerous, but it leaves your car vulnerable since the alarm won't work even if the main battery is fine. Any BMW-certified mechanic should be able to handle this, it's a straightforward fix and they deal with it regularly.

Thanks for sharing your experience, really helpful! It sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the fix? Also, has everything been working smoothly with the alarm system since the repair? Just want to make sure it's a long-term solution before I commit to getting it fixed.

Hey there! Happy to help with those questions. Yes, everything has been working perfectly since I got it fixed, the alarm system is back to normal, and that annoying "Additional battery alarm system defective" warning hasn't shown up again. The whole thing cost me about 330€, which covered both replacing the old battery and the recoding work. To be honest, I was a bit worried at first about whether it would be a lasting solution, but it's been completely reliable since the repair. The mechanic mentioned these backup batteries typically last around 7-8 years before needing replacement, so it made sense mine needed changing. It's definitely worth getting it sorted, much better than leaving your car vulnerable without a working alarm system. Think of it as regular maintenance, like changing the oil or brake pads. These backup batteries just have a limited lifespan and need replacing eventually. Hope this helps with your decision!

Just wanted to update you all, I finally got my BMW fixed today! After hearing about your experience, I decided to bite the bullet and take it to a mechanic. what a relief! The whole process was way smoother than I expected. Turned out you were spot on, it was indeed the backup battery. The mechanic found it completely dead, just like you described. They got it sorted in about an hour, and the total cost was pretty close to what you mentioned. Got to say, I was pretty nervous about getting ripped off, but the price seemed fair for what needed doing. The best part? My alarm system's working perfectly now. That annoying warning light's gone, and the car's properly secure again. Thanks so much for sharing your experience, really helped me make the right call instead of putting it off longer. Sometimes it just takes hearing from someone who's been through the same thing to get over that hesitation, you know?

Let our mechanics help you!
