BMW ABS Light On: Random Braking and Jerky Acceleration

ABS/DSC system is not working

Hi all! I need some advice regarding my 2013 BMW 6 diesel (180k km). My ABS light is constantly on, and I'm experiencing some weird traction issues. The car seems to apply brakes out of nowhere even on dry roads, and the acceleration feels jerky. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm hesitant to go back. The error scan shows ABS system faults, and I suspect it might be related to the speed sensors. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? If so, what was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost? Looking forward to your insights! Thanks in advance

Hey there! I actually faced something very similar with my 2016 BMW 5 Series 520d last winter. The symptoms were nearly identical, unusual brake engagement, jerky acceleration, and that annoying ABS light that wouldn't go away. After taking it to the shop, turned out it wasn't just the speed sensors. The ABS control module itself was defective and needed replacement. It was seriously affecting the whole stability control system. The mechanic showed me that moisture had gotten into the unit over time, causing internal corrosion. This isn't a job you want to put off, it affects your vehicle's core safety systems. In my case, they had to replace the control unit and recalibrate the entire ABS system. Took about two days to complete the work with parts ordering. Based on your description, I'd bet you're dealing with the same issue. Would definitely recommend getting it checked by a BMW specialist. This isn't something you want a general mechanic messing with. Best of luck with the repair.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful since I'm dealing with pretty much the exact same symptoms. I was wondering, if you don't mind sharing, how much did the whole repair set you back? Also, have you had any other ABS-related issues pop up since getting it fixed? Just want to make sure I'm prepared for what's coming.

Hey again! Just wanted to update you on my case, I paid 1000 € for the ABS control unit replacement and honestly, it was worth every penny. The good news is that since getting it fixed, I haven't had a single ABS-related problem. The Speed signal fault that was driving me crazy completely disappeared after the repair. My car's running smooth as silk now, no more unusual brake interventions or jerky acceleration. It's such a relief not seeing that ABS warning light anymore! My specialist mechanic really knew what they were doing with the control unit replacement. I know it's not cheap, but considering it's a core safety system, I wouldn't try to cut corners here. Plus, the peace of mind knowing everything's working properly is priceless. The repair has held up perfectly for months now. Trust me, once you get it sorted, you'll notice the difference immediately in how the car handles. Just make sure you go to someone who really knows BMWs, it makes all the difference. Let me know if you need any other details about the repair!

Thanks so much for all the details! I actually bit the bullet and got it fixed yesterday. Turned out you were spot on, it was the ABS control unit. The mechanic I found was great, totally different from my last experience. He walked me through everything and even showed me the corroded unit after replacing it. Cost me about 1200 € in total, a bit more than yours but they also had to replace one wheel sensor that was acting up. The whole job took about a day and a half, but wow, what a difference! The car drives like new now. No more unusual braking or jerky movements, and that annoying ABS light is finally gone. Really glad I didn't put this off any longer. The mechanic mentioned that driving with a faulty ABS system could've led to bigger problems down the line. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it gave me the push I needed to get it sorted properly! I'll definitely keep everyone posted if anything else comes up, but so far, it's running perfectly.
