Stalling while idling

Hey there! My 2019 BMW 8 (70k km, gasoline) is giving me headaches lately. The engine's been acting up, rough idle, stalling, struggling to start, and drinking way more fuel than usual. Last mechanic mentioned something about faulty injector nozzles but I'm not too sure about their diagnosis after a previous bad experience. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What was the actual problem and how much did the repair cost? Would really appreciate some insights before I take it back to a shop. Thanks in advance!

I experienced nearly identical issues with my 2016 BMW 7 Series last spring. The symptoms matched yours exactly, rough idle, hard starts, and terrible fuel consumption. Initially thought it was something major, but turned out to be dirty fuel injectors. Had it serviced at a certified shop where they did a complete fuel injection system cleaning and replaced two injectors that were beyond cleaning. The whole issue was caused by carbon buildup and deposits in the injection system. This is actually quite common in direct injection engines after 60-70k km. While it wasn't a major mechanical problem, it definitely needed immediate attention to prevent engine damage. The repair solved all the symptoms and the car runs like new again. Just make sure you go to a reputable shop that specializes in BMW fuel injection systems. Best of luck with yours, these symptoms definitely point toward injector issues based on my experience.

Thanks for sharing your experience, really helpful since our issues sound so similar! Just what I needed to hear before heading to the shop. Would you mind telling me roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole service? Also curious if you've had any similar problems pop up since the repair?

Hey there! Happy to give you an update! I actually just had this fixed recently, had the injection nozzle replaced and it cost me 515 € all in. The mechanic confirmed it was definitely a defective injector issue, just like I suspected when I first replied to you. Since getting it sorted, my BMW's running like a dream, no more of those annoying symptoms I mentioned before. The rough idle's completely gone, starts up perfectly every time, and fuel consumption is back to normal. Haven't had a single issue pop up since the repair, which was about three months ago now. Honestly, it was worth every penny considering how much better the car runs now. If your symptoms are as similar as they sound, I'd say you're probably looking at the same fix. Just make sure you get a proper diagnosis from someone who knows these engines well, makes all the difference! Let me know how it goes with yours, always interested to hear if others have the same experience with their repairs!

What a relief! Thanks for the detailed follow-up about your repair costs and results. I actually just got back from a trusted mechanic who fixed my car yesterday. You were spot on, it was indeed the fuel injectors causing all the trouble. They did a thorough cleaning and had to replace one faulty injector. Cost me a bit more than yours, around 600 €, but honestly, I'm just happy it's fixed. The car's running smooth as silk now, no more rough starts or excessive fuel consumption. Funny how our BMWs had such similar issues! Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it gave me the confidence to get it checked out properly instead of putting it off. Think I'll start doing more regular maintenance checks to prevent these issues in the future. Thanks again for all your help. It's great knowing someone else went through the same thing and got it sorted successfully!
