BMW 8 Fuel Sensor Nightmare: Stalling and Gauge Issues

Check engine light on

|

Stalling while idling

|

Fault stored

Hey car enthusiasts, having some concerning issues with my 2018 BMW 8 diesel (48k km). The fuel gauge is stuck, engine light is on, and it keeps stalling at idle. Computer scan shows error codes. Thinking it might be the fuel level sensor. Has anyone experienced this combination of problems? Would love to hear about your repair experiences, especially regarding fuel sensor replacements. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so looking for some real-world feedback before choosing where to take it. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had very similar symptoms with my 2015 BMW 7 Series diesel last winter. The fuel gauge issue combined with stalling pointed to the fuel pump control module and a faulty fuse in my case. Initially thought it was just the sensor, but it turned out to be more complex. The repair involved replacing the control module and checking the entire fuse box. It wasn't a quick fix, needed to keep the car at the garage for a couple of days. This was actually quite serious since it could've left me stranded anywhere due to the stalling. My advice? Get it checked asap, these symptoms shouldn't be ignored as they can lead to bigger problems. The engine light being on with those specific issues often indicates something beyond just a sensor problem. Make sure they do a proper diagnostic scan rather than just assuming it's the fuel level sensor. Since fixing it, haven't had any similar issues. The car runs perfectly now, but it was definitely worth getting it properly diagnosed and fixed at a certified shop.

Thanks for sharing your experience! This actually sounds very similar to what I'm dealing with. I'm planning to take it to a certified shop tomorrow, definitely don't want to risk getting stranded somewhere. Do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, just curious, has anything else popped up since you got it fixed? Want to make sure I'm prepared for what might come next.

Hey again! Actually, I've got some good news to share about my repair experience. Just checked my records, it was way simpler than initially expected. The mechanic found that the main issue was indeed the fuel level sensor fault, and theyaged to fix it completely. The total cost came to just 52€ since it turned out to be a faulty fuse causing all that trouble. Since getting it sorted, my BMW's been running like a dream, no more gauge issues, no stalling, and the engine light's stayed off. It's such a relief when you find out it's something relatively simple and affordable! I was honestly expecting a much bigger bill based on all the symptoms. Haven't had a single related problem pop up in the months since the repair. The car's back to its reliable self, which is exactly what you want from a BMW, right? Just make sure your mechanic does a thorough diagnostic check first, sometimes what seems like a complex issue can have a pretty straightforward fix. Let us know how you get on at the shop tomorrow, hopefully you'll get equally good news!

Just got back from the certified shop and wanted to update you all! What an experience, turns out my situation was quite different from what I expected. The mechanic found that my car had a clogged fuel filter along with a damaged wiring harness connecting to the fuel pump. Not what I was hoping for, but at least they found the real issue. The repair took about four hours, and I watched them work through most of it. They were really thorough, testing everything step by step. Cost me more than I initially planned, but seeing them fix it properly was worth every penny. The best part? No more stalling, the gauge works perfectly, and that annoying engine light is finally off! They also gave me some maintenance tips to prevent similar issues in the future. Really glad I didn't try to cut corners with a cheaper, non-certified shop. Thanks everyone for your advice, especially about getting it checked properly rather than just assuming it was a simple sensor issue. Time to enjoy my smooth-running BMW again!
