BMW 8 Diesel Troubleshooting: Multiple Warning Signs

Poor fuel economy

Check engine light on

Loss of engine power

Hey there BMW 8 owners, my 2021 diesel model is acting up with several issues lately: rough cold starts, eating more fuel than usual, noticeable power loss, and the CEL is lit. I suspect cylinder pressure problems might be behind this. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and what the actual problem turned out to be. Mainly interested in workshop solutions that worked for you. Thanks!

Hey there! I've got some experience working with BMWs (medium level enthusiast here). Had a similar situation with my 2019 BMW 7 Series diesel last year. The symptoms you're describing sound very familiar to what I went through. In my case, it turned out that a previous repair job on the high-pressure fuel pump wasn't done properly, which led to these exact issues. Thankfully, since it was a consequential error from the previous repair, my workshop took full responsibility and fixed it at no cost. Could you share some more details about your 8 Series? Like the specific engine variant and mileage? Also, any recent repairs before these symptoms started showing up? This info would help me give you more specific advice based on my experience. Don't want to jump to conclusions, but these symptoms often point to fuel system problems in these engines. Let me know the details, and I'll try to help further!

Thanks for jumping in! Mine's got 121555 KM on the clock, and I just had the service done last month. Before these symptoms started, everything was running smoothly. Your fuel pump theory is interesting, the timing lines up because the symptoms began shortly after that last service. Did your car also feel particularly sluggish during acceleration when you had this issue? I'm wondering if I should head back to the same workshop or try a different specialist.

Hey again! Yes, my 7 Series definitely had that same sluggish feeling during acceleration, it was super frustrating! Looking at what you've shared about the timing of these issues starting after your service, I'm even more convinced it could be fuel system related, just like what I experienced. My car was really struggling to get going, especially on cold mornings, felt like it was running on three cylinders instead of six! And yeah, the fuel consumption was ridiculous. I was literally watching the fuel gauge drop faster than usual. When I took mine back to the workshop, they found that during the service, some debris had gotten into the fuel system during the filter change. It wasn't immediately obvious, but it started causing problems within a couple of weeks. Since your timeline is similar, it might be worth checking this out. In your shoes, I'd definitely go back to the same workshop first, they did the recent service, so they should at least take a look at it. If they push back or seem unsure, then maybe consider a specialist. But start with them since they might take responsibility if it's related to their recent work, just like my workshop did. Let me know what you find out, I'm really curious if it turns out to be something similar to what I dealt with!

Thanks so much for the detailed response! I've decided to take your advice and booked it back at the same workshop for tomorrow morning. You've actually made me feel a lot better about this whole situation, knowing that someone else has dealt with similar issues and got them sorted out definitely helps! I'll make sure to mention the fuel system debris possibility you brought up, especially since the timing after my service matches your experience so closely. The sluggish acceleration you described is exactly what I'm experiencing, it's like the car's just really reluctant to get moving, especially first thing in the morning. I'll update you once I get the diagnosis. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience in such detail. It's definitely given me a clearer direction on what to discuss with the mechanics. Fingers crossed it's something straightforward like in your case! Thanks again for all the help. It's great to have support from other BMW owners who've been through similar issues.

Let our mechanics help you!
