BMW 8 Diesel Stalling: Help with Check Engine Issues

Check engine light on

Stalling while idling

Hey fellow BMW owners, having trouble with my 2018 BMW 8 diesel. The engine's stalling at idle and throwing a check engine light. Error codes are stored in the system. I suspect bad fuel might be the culprit. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Interested to hear what your mechanic diagnosed and how they fixed it. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Hey there! I had a similar problem with my 2016 BMW 6 Series diesel last year. I've got some experience working on cars but nothing too advanced. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I dealt with. Initially thought it was fuel related too, but turned out to be a faulty wiring connection to the fuel pressure sensor. My trusted mechanic found that the connector plug was corroded, causing intermittent signals. They replaced the cable and connector, cost me 95 Euro, and the problem never came back. Can you share more specifics about when the stalling occurs? Like, does it happen only when the engine's warm or cold? Also, what error codes are you getting? This would help determine if you're facing the same issue I had. The 8 Series is basically a fancier cousin of my 6 Series, so many components are similar. Would love to help you narrow this down further.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Mine has 65206 KM on the clock, and this started happening right after my latest service. The stalling mainly occurs when the engine's warm, especially at traffic lights. It's super annoying because it feels like the engine wants to die completely. I'll definitely have my mechanic check the wiring and connector you mentioned. I've been hesitant to drive it much since this started. Really hoping it's just a simple fix like yours was, rather than something major! The error codes are showing fuel system-related issues, which matches what you experienced. Did you notice any other symptoms before the stalling started? Like rough idling or hesitation during acceleration?

Hey again! Yeah, that's super interesting that it started right after your service. You know what, when my issue began, I actually did notice some rough idling before the full-on stalling started. It was like a slight shudder at first, especially when the engine was warm, just like you're experiencing. Since you mentioned it started after service, I'd definitely have them double-check their work. Sometimes these things can be as simple as a connector not being fully seated after routine maintenance. In my case, the hesitation during acceleration was pretty noticeable too, especially between 1500-2000 RPM. The fuel system error codes you're getting really do sound identical to what I dealt with. Initially, I was worried it might be something expensive like the high-pressure fuel pump, but thankfully it was just that corroded connector. These BMWs can be pretty sensitive to electrical issues. Quick tip from my experience, while you're waiting to get it checked, try not to let the fuel tank get too low. When I had this problem, I noticed the symptoms got worse when I was running on less than a quarter tank. Not sure if it's related, but might help minimize the stalling until you can get it sorted. Keep me posted on what your mechanic finds! Really curious if it's the same issue as mine.

Thanks so much for all this detailed info! It's actually a huge relief to hear someone else had such similar symptoms. You're right, I've noticed it does seem worse when my tank is getting low, so I'll definitely keep it topped up until I can get it looked at. I never thought about the service possibly being related, but it makes total sense. I'll mention this to my mechanic when I take it in tomorrow. The problem you described between 1500-2000 RPM is exactly what I'm experiencing too, it's like the car can't decide if it wants to run or not. I really hope it turns out to be just a connector issue like yours. The fact that you got it fixed for such a reasonable price gives me hope! I was honestly freaking out thinking it might be the fuel pump or something major. I'll update the forum once I get it diagnosed and fixed. Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience, it's been super helpful!
