BMW 7 Series with loss of power and increased fuel consumption: advice wanted

Loss of engine power

Shaking while idling

Check engine light on

Poor fuel economy

Car won't start

Engine shuts off by itself

Jerking on acceleration

Hello folks! I need your help. I'm having some problems with my 2009 BMW 7 Series (mileage: 323,148). The engine loses power, the indicator light is on and the engine stops by itself. In addition, the car jerks when accelerating, often won't start and consumes a lot of fuel. It also wobbles when idling. I think that the quantity drift compensation needs to be reset. Have any of you had similar experiences with your diesel and could give me a tip on what to do? My last visit to the garage didn't really help and your advice would be really great. Is this a known problem and what was your experience with your mechanic? Thanks for your help!

Hey, I know the problem. I had very similar problems with my 2012 BMW 5 Series. The engine jerked and had a loss of power, just like you described. For me, it was actually a serious problem. It turned out that the injectors and turbo needed to be replaced. So, definitely check those two parts. You could also have the spark plugs or fuel pump inspected. This may sound like a lot, but I can tell you that this work made all the difference. Make sure you go to a mechanic you can trust. Last time, I felt that my garage understood what they needed to focus on. I also feel confident that a thorough diagnosis will lead to a successful repair. Don't try to fix these problems yourself, it could lead to major damage. Hopefully you can sort it out soon!

Hi, thanks for the helpful tip! That sounds pretty much like what my BMW is currently going through. I will definitely have the injectors and turbo looked at. Is it fair to ask what you had to pay for the replacement at the time? And has anything else on the car been bitching since then? I really appreciate your help and hope I can get the whole thing sorted soon.

Hey, no problem, happy to help! The injector on my BMW was actually defective. After visiting the garage, I had to pay €515 to fix the problem. Expensive, but what can you do, right? Since then, the car has been running smoothly again. And yes, you guessed right: the volume drift compensation had to be reset and that helped. Since then, there have been no more problems. So, hang in there, let the mechanic do it and then your BMW should be fit again. Good luck, buddy!

Hey, that really gives me hope now! Thanks for the detailed information and the price you paid. That gives me an idea of what to expect. All in all, it doesn't sound like a quick fix, but at least I know a bit more about the problem. I'll take this to a trusted mechanic and hope my BMW can hit the roads again soon. Thanks again, buddy! Your help was really great.
