Wow, thanks for sharing that, sounds like we had nearly identical problems! Dealing with those unusual warnings and heavy steering is super frustrating. I got mine fixed about 6 months ago. Hey, would you mind telling me how much you ended up paying for the repair? Also curious if you've had any other issues pop up since they replaced the sensor unit?

Hey there! Thanks for asking about the repair costs. Since you mentioned your similar experience, I thought I'd update you on mine. I got lucky actually, turned out I didn't need a full sensor replacement like I initially thought. The mechanic found it was just a coding issue with the steering angle sensor that needed fixing. Ended up paying 195 € for the recalibration and coding work, which was way less than I expected! Haven't had a single warning light or issue since then, the steering feels perfect now, nice and smooth like it should be. No more of that annoying heavy steering or those scary vibrations. The ESP and ABS are working normally too, which is a huge relief. Honestly, I was worried it would be a much bigger repair bill, so I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. It's been about 14 months since the fix, and my 5 Series has been running like a dream. Sometimes these BMW issues sound worse than they actually are!

Thanks a lot for the update! you got off way cheaper than I did. My repair ended up costing close to 800 € since they had to replace the entire sensor unit. The mechanic said mine was completely fried and couldn't be recalibrated. But hey, at least both our cars are running smoothly now! Had to visit three different mechanics before finding someone who properly diagnosed the issue. The first two kept insisting it was just a tire balancing problem. Went to this specialist BMW shop, and they spotted the sensor issue right away. Did all the work in one day, and I've had zero problems since then. The steering's back to being light and responsive, and those annoying warning lights are history. Funny how these things work out differently even with such similar symptoms. Definitely learned my lesson about going to the right mechanic straight away rather than trying to save a few bucks with general repair shops.

Had exactly the same issue with my 2018 BMW 5 Series Hybrid last winter. Started with unusual ESP and ABS warnings, followed by heavy steering. The steering wheel vibrations made driving quite unsettling. Initially, I thought it was just a sensor calibration issue, but when I took it to the garage, they found that the steering angle sensor had completely failed. The diagnostic showed incorrect readings being sent to the car's computer, which triggered all those warning lights. In my case, they had to replace the entire sensor unit and recalibrate the system. The job took about 4 hours to complete, including testing. It's not a DIY fix, requires specific diagnostic tools and proper calibration. While it wasn't the most complex repair, it's definitely not something you want to ignore as it affects critical safety systems. Worth getting it checked soon, as driving with faulty steering sensors can be dangerous, especially when the ABS and ESP systems aren't functioning correctly.
