BMW 7 Series Warning Light Storm, Multiple System Failures

Cruise control without function

Hi all! Having some trouble with my 2009 BMW 7 Diesel. Multiple warning lights keep popping up on the dash (including ESP, ABS, brake system), steering wheel buttons are dead, and cruise control isn't working. Checked the error memory and found some stored codes. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms, especially related to the cruise control? Would really appreciate hearing about your repair experiences and what your mechanics found. Also interested in what it cost to fix. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! Had a similar issue with my 2007 BMW 5 series diesel (I also own a 3 series). I have some experience working on cars, though I mainly stick to basic maintenance. Those symptoms sound really familiar. Mine started acting up the same way, multiple warning lights, dead steering controls, no cruise control. Turned out to be a faulty wiring connection in the steering wheel module. Took it to my regular workshop, and they found corroded contacts in one of the plugs. They cleaned the connections and replaced a damaged cable. Total bill came to 95 Euro, and it's been working perfectly since then. Pretty straightforward fix once they identified the issue. Could you share which engine variant you have and if you've noticed any other electrical quirks? Might help narrow things down, as these symptoms can sometimes point to different issues depending on the specific model.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I have the same exact issue with my 7 series, which has 24357 KM on the clock since the latest service. That's really helpful to know about the wiring connection, definitely sounds like it could be the same problem, especially since the symptoms match perfectly. Good to hear it wasn't too expensive to fix. Going to have my mechanic check the steering wheel module connections first before exploring other possibilities. Quick question, did you notice if the warning lights would sometimes flicker or come on intermittently before they stayed on permanently? That's what's happening with mine and wondering if it's related.

Hey again! Yes, that flickering issue is exactly what happened with my BMW too! Before all the warning lights stayed on permanently, they would come and go out of nowhere, especially when turning the steering wheel. It's like déjà vu hearing about your symptoms. Actually, now that you mention the intermittent warnings, I remember this was one of the key things that helped my mechanic diagnose it as a wiring issue rather than something more serious. These kinds of electrical gremlins typically start with intermittent problems before becoming permanent. During the repair, my mechanic showed me how the connections had started corroding, which caused this inconsistent electrical contact. Every time the wheel turned, it would disturb the connection, hence the unusual warning lights. Makes total sense when you think about it. Just make sure your mechanic takes a good look at all the wiring connections in the steering wheel module, not just the obvious ones. In my case, they initially missed one corroded connection during the first inspection, and the problem came back briefly before they found the second bad spot. Let me know how it goes, really curious if it turns out to be the same issue. These BMWs can be tricky with electrical problems, but usually it's something relatively simple like this.

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up! That's super reassuring to hear about the flickering being connected to the steering movement, mine does exactly the same thing. I've already called my mechanic and booked it in for tomorrow morning. I'll make sure to tell him about checking all the wiring connections thoroughly, including the less obvious ones. Really don't want to deal with having to bring it back if they miss something. It's actually a relief knowing it might just be corroded connections rather than something major with the electrical system. I was worried I'd be looking at a massive repair bill! I'll definitely let you know what they find, really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. Fingers crossed it's as straightforward as yours was!
