Sunblind gets stuck in one position

Fault stored

I've got a 2018 BMW 7 Series Hybrid with a stubborn sunblind issue. The blind's stuck in position and won't move either way. Checked the error memory and there's a fault stored. Has anyone dealt with this problem? Really interested to hear what fixes worked for you and what your service center diagnosed. Any tips on troubleshooting would be great too.

Hey there! I have some experience with cars and had a very similar issue with my 2016 BMW 5 Series Hybrid (the smaller sibling of your 7 Series). The sunblind got completely stuck and wouldn't budge an inch. After trying the basic stuff like checking fuses, I took it to my trusted workshop. They diagnosed a faulty sunblind motor, pretty common issue actually. Got it replaced and it set me back about 330 Euro, but it's been working perfectly since then. Could you share if you're hearing any noises when trying to operate the blind? Also, does your car show any specific error codes? This would help narrow down if you're dealing with the same problem I had.

Hey! Thanks for the detailed response. I've done 53826 KM in my 7 Series, and it was last serviced about 3 months ago. I actually do hear a faint clicking noise when trying to operate the blind, but nothing else happens. Unfortunately, I don't have access to the specific error codes right now, just know there's something stored in there. Really appreciate the heads up about the motor, that's super helpful to know it could be a similar issue to what you experienced. I'll try to get those error codes and report back. Did the clicking sound familiar to what you experienced?

Hey again! Yes, that clicking sound you're describing is exactly what I experienced with my 5 Series before getting it fixed. It's that frustrating little 'click-click' noise without any movement, right? Just to compare notes, my car had around 48000 KM when the issue started, so we're in a similar ballpark. The clicking noise is typically a telltale sign of a failing motor, in my case, it was trying to move but just didn't have enough power to actually operate the blind anymore. Since you mentioned your car was serviced recently, it might be worth checking if the issue was noted during the service. Sometimes these problems start small and gradually get worse. In my case, the blind started moving slower about a month before it completely gave up. The motor replacement really did solve everything for me, haven't had a single issue since then. While it wasn't exactly cheap, it was worth it to get everything working properly again. Keep us posted about those error codes when you get them, would be interesting to see if they match what I had!

Thanks so much for confirming about the clicking sound, that's exactly what I'm hearing! It's actually really reassuring to know you had such a similar experience, especially since your car had comparable mileage when the issue started. The slow movement you mentioned rings a bell too, now that I think about it, the blind was getting a bit sluggish over the past few weeks before it completely stuck. I actually didn't mention anything during the recent service because it seemed so minor at the time. Definitely kicking myself for that now! I'll get those error codes tomorrow and send them your way. Really appreciate all your help with this, it's made me feel much better about the whole situation. At least now I won't be completely shocked if they tell me I need a new motor! I'll probably just bite the bullet and get it fixed properly rather than trying any DIY solutions. Better to do it right the first time with these luxury cars, right?
