BMW 7 Series DPF Warning: Power Loss & Black Smoke Issues

Black smoke from exhaust on acceleration

|

Loss of engine power

Hi all! Having trouble with my 2011 BMW 7 diesel. The DPF warning light came on recently, along with noticeable power loss and black smoke during acceleration. Car failed emissions and shows multiple DPF-related error codes. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? I suspect a faulty particulate filter but would appreciate hearing about repair experiences and workshop solutions before proceeding. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I've got some experience with DPF issues. Had a similar problem with my 2013 BMW 5 diesel last year. I'm fairly knowledgeable about cars but still trust professionals with complex issues like this. Your symptoms sound exactly like what I faced. My car also had power loss, black smoke, and those annoying warning lights. After diagnosis, it turned out the DPF was completely clogged and damaged beyond repair. Had it replaced at a workshop specializing in BMW repairs. Total bill was around 1550 Euro, but it solved the problem completely. What's your mileage and maintenance history? Have you noticed if the issue gets worse during city driving? These details would help understand if you're dealing with the same problem I had. If it is the DPF, I'd recommend getting it checked soon to avoid further engine damage. Want to share more specifics about your car's behavior? Might help narrow down the exact issue.

Thanks for sharing your experience! My car's at 111802 KM and had its last service about 3 months ago. Your situation does sound very similar to what I'm experiencing. The symptoms are actually worse in city traffic, especially during stop-and-go driving. The power loss is most noticeable when I try to accelerate on the highway, it feels like the car is really struggling to get up to speed. It started gradually but has gotten worse over the past few weeks. My regular mechanic suggested a forced regeneration cycle, but that didn't help much. Did you notice any improvement after the DPF replacement? Just trying to gauge if I should expect similar repair costs or if there might be other issues to consider. Thanks for your help!

Hey there again! Absolutely, I remember dealing with my DPF issues like it was yesterday. Your symptoms at 111802 KM match exactly what I experienced, especially that struggle during highway acceleration. My 2013 BMW 5 was actually showing the same behavior around the 110000 KM mark. After replacing my DPF, the difference was like night and day. The car got its power back immediately, no more black smoke, and the engine ran much smoother. The forced regeneration attempt your mechanic tried was actually the first thing my mechanic did too, but like in your case, it didn't solve the problem. I did notice one thing though, after the replacement, I started doing more highway drives and keeping an eye on my driving style to prevent another DPF clog. Been about a year now, and no issues whatsoever. The repair cost I mentioned earlier (1550 Euro) was worth every penny. Just a heads up, when they replaced mine, they found some minor damage to the sensors too, so you might want to have those checked while they're at it. Could save you some trouble down the road. Keep me posted on what you decide to do. Always happy to share more details about my experience if you need them. Take care.

Thanks so much for all the detailed information, it's really helpful to hear from someone who's been through this exact situation. Everything you've described matches my experience perfectly, especially about the city driving making it worse. I'm pretty convinced now that I'm dealing with the same DPF issue you had. It's reassuring to hear that the replacement solved all your problems completely. I was worried there might be other underlying issues, but since our cases are so similar, I'm feeling more confident about going ahead with the repair. The cost is significant, but it sounds worth it to get the car running properly again. I'll definitely take your advice about checking the sensors too, don't want to miss anything while they're doing the work. Think I'll book it in next week with a BMW specialist. The stop-and-go traffic is really making it struggle, so better to get it sorted sooner rather than later. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. I'll try to maintain better driving habits after the repair to prevent future DPF issues. Thanks again for all your help! Best regards
