BMW 7 Series AdBlue Issues Causing No-Start Condition

Error message in the speedometer

Hey everyone! Having some trouble with my 2017 BMW 7 diesel (195K km). Getting error messages on the dash, and the engine won't start. The error memory shows some codes too. I think it might be AdBlue related, but after a bad experience with my last mechanic, I'm hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would love to hear about your experiences and if you have recommendations for dealing with this issue. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I actually dealt with something very similar on my 2014 BMW 5 Series 530d last winter. The symptoms were identical, dashboard warnings and starting issues. Turned out the AdBlue system had a failure between the tank and dosing unit. The mechanic found that the delivery line was clogged and the pump wasn't working properly. It was a serious issue since the car went into limp mode and eventually wouldn't start at all. The fix required replacing the AdBlue pump and cleaning out the entire delivery system. It took about two days to get it sorted, but since then, no more issues. My advice would be to get it checked soon because these AdBlue problems don't fix themselves and can lead to more damage if left untreated. Best of luck with yours!

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful as it sounds exactly like what I'm dealing with. The symptoms match up perfectly. I'm glad to hear you got it sorted out, though I'm a bit worried about the potential cost. Would you mind sharing how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other related issues popping up? I'm trying to get a sense of what I might be in for.

Hey again! Happy to give you an update! After getting it fixed, I spent 250 € to repair the faulty AdBlue output line between the tank and dosing unit. I know that probably sounds like a lot, but considering how crucial the AdBlue system is, it was worth every penny. The good news is that since getting it sorted, my 530d has been running perfectly, no warning lights, no starting issues, nothing. It's been such a relief! The mechanic did a thorough job cleaning and checking the entire system, which I think made all the difference. I'd definitely recommend getting yours looked at soon. These issues tend to get worse if you wait, and you really don't want to end up stranded somewhere. The repair cost might vary a bit, but at least you'll have peace of mind once it's fixed. Let me know how it goes with yours, always interested to hear if others have similar experiences with their BMWs!

Thanks so much for all the details! I bit the bullet and took my car to a new mechanic yesterday. You were absolutely right, it was the AdBlue system. The delivery line was completely blocked and the pump needed replacing. Ended up costing me about 300 for the whole job, which wasn't as bad as I'd feared. The mechanic was really thorough and even showed me what was wrong. Got it back today and it's running like a dream, no more warning lights or starting issues. Such a relief! The new mechanic was great too, really explained everything and didn't try to upsell me on unnecessary stuff like my last one did. Really appreciate you sharing your experience, it gave me the confidence to get it sorted before it turned into something worse. Time to stop worrying about every little noise the car makes now!
