ABS/DSC system is not working

Hi everyone! Looking for advice regarding an ABS issue with my 2018 BMW 7 Series Hybrid (73k km). The ABS warning light stays on and the system isn't working properly. The diagnostic showed a lateral acceleration sensor fault. After a bad experience with my previous mechanic, I'm hesitant about where to take it. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? What was your repair experience and cost like? Any input would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

I had a similar issue with my 2015 BMW 5 Series Hybrid last winter. The ABS warning light came on and stayed on. Initially, I thought it was just a sensor glitch, but the diagnostic revealed that the control unit was defective and needed replacement. It turned out to be a serious issue that required immediate attention since it affected the entire ABS system and stability control. The repair involved replacing the faulty control unit and recalibrating the system. The garage also had to reprogram the new unit to sync with the car's computer. The whole job took about two days at the dealership. It wasn't just a simple sensor replacement, they had to test the entire ABS system to ensure everything was working correctly. In my experience, this isn't something you want to postpone or have done at a regular shop without proper BMW diagnostic equipment. Hope this helps with your decision-making.

Thanks for sharing your experience! That's really helpful to know it was the control unit in your case. Since you dealt with a similar situation, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, curious if you've had any other ABS-related problems pop up since getting it fixed?

Hey there! Just wanted to follow up about the repair costs since you asked. After taking my 5 Series to the mechanic, I ended up paying around 1000 € to fix the faulty control unit. I know it sounds steep, but honestly, it was worth every penny because it completely solved the Lateral acceleration sensor fault. The good news is I haven't had a single ABS-related issue since the repair was done. The system's been working perfectly, and that annoying warning light hasn't come back on. It's been such a relief not having to worry about it anymore. The mechanic really knew what they were doing with the BMW systems, and it shows in how well everything's working now. Just like in your case, my ABS warning light was constantly on before the fix, but now the car drives like new again. If you're still on the fence about getting it repaired, I'd definitely recommend getting it sorted sooner rather than later, these things can get worse if left unchecked.

Thanks so much for the detailed follow-up about the costs and the long-term results! Just wanted to update you all, I actually took my car in yesterday after getting your advice. Turns out I had a similar issue, but my repair bill came to a bit more since they found some additional wear on related components. The whole experience wasn't nearly as bad as I'd feared. The mechanic I chose specializes in BMW hybrids and really took the time to explain everything. They had it fixed within a day, replaced the sensor, did some recalibration, and ran full diagnostics to make sure everything was working properly. Best part is, I took it for a test drive this morning and the ABS is working perfectly now, no more warning lights! Really glad I didn't put this off any longer. Thanks again for sharing your experience, it definitely helped me make the right decision instead of just hoping the problem would fix itself!
