BMW 7 Hybrid PCV Issue Causing Performance Drop

Check engine light on

|

Loss of engine power

Hey everyone! Need your input on a potential crankcase ventilation valve issue with my 2021 BMW 7 Hybrid (8,095 KM). My check engine light's been acting up, and I'm experiencing power loss and inconsistent speeds. Had a not-so-great experience with my last mechanic, so I'm a bit hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their BMW? Would love to hear about your experiences and recommendations for getting this fixed properly. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2018 BMW 5 Series Hybrid last winter. The symptoms you're describing match what I experienced, power loss, irregular acceleration, and that annoying check engine light. When I took it to the garage, they diagnosed a faulty crankcase ventilation system. It's actually a common issue in these models. The PCV valve was clogged, causing excess pressure in the crankcase. This caused oil vapor to back up, affecting engine performance. The fix required replacing the entire PCV valve assembly and cleaning the intake manifold. It was a serious job that took about 6 hours to complete. The mechanic showed me the old valve, it was completely gunked up. After the repair, the difference in performance was night and day. My advice? Don't put this off. A faulty PCV system can lead to bigger engine problems if left unchecked. Make sure to find a certified BMW technician who knows these hybrid systems well. The repair isn't particularly complex, but it needs to be done right. Best of luck with the repair.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience, it's really helpful! Dealing with these hybrid systems can be tricky, and your situation sounds exactly like what I'm facing. You've honestly made me feel better about getting this sorted sooner rather than later. Quick question, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other issues pop up? Would really appreciate knowing what to expect cost-wise and if I should be watching out for anything else.

Hey again! Happy to give you an update! After getting the crankcase ventilation valve replaced, my car's been running like a dream. The total bill came to 360 Euro, worth every penny if you ask me. The power issues completely disappeared, and I haven't had a single warning light since. You know what's funny? I was super nervous about the repair at first, just like you, but it turned out to be a pretty straightforward fix for the mechanic. My BMW's been performing beautifully for months now, smooth acceleration, consistent power, and none of those annoying symptoms I mentioned before. Just make sure you get a qualified technician who knows their way around hybrid systems. The repair might seem pricey, but it's definitely cheaper than dealing with bigger engine problems down the road. Let us know how it goes with your repair! Always good to share experiences in the BMW community.

Thanks for following up and sharing those details! I went ahead and got my car fixed last week, and I'm really glad I did. Found a certified BMW tech who knew exactly what they were talking about, way better than my previous mechanic. The final cost was actually pretty close to what you mentioned, and the whole repair took about 5 hours. They showed me the old valve, and wow, it was in rough shape! The tech explained everything clearly, which was a nice change from my last garage experience. The car's running beautifully now, no more power issues or warning lights. Such a relief to have it sorted! The acceleration is smooth again, and it feels like I'm driving a new car. You were absolutely right about not putting it off, I can see how this could've turned into a much bigger problem. Really appreciate everyone's advice here. It definitely helped me make the right decision to get it fixed properly instead of trying to save a few bucks with a less experienced mechanic. These hybrid systems really do need someone who knows what they're doing!
