BMW 7 Diesel AC and Climate Control System Total Failure

A/C System Not Engaging

Error message in the speedometer

Hi all! My 2012 BMW 7 diesel has multiple issues popping up simultaneously. Getting error messages on the dash, and the entire AC system is acting up, won't turn on at all. The automatic climate control is completely dead too. I suspect it might be the temperature sensor at the heat exchanger, but I'm not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Would really appreciate hearing about your experiences, especially regarding the repair process and what exactly your workshop did to fix it. Thanks in advance

Hey there! I've got some experience with cars, and this sounds very familiar. I had a similar issue with my 2014 BMW 5 series diesel (had it before switching to a 3 series). The symptoms were exactly like yours, AC completely dead, climate control not responding. Took it to my workshop and turns out the AC control unit was fried. The repair wasn't cheap, set me back 980 Euro, but it fixed everything. They had to replace the entire control module. Could be the same issue in your case, but to help better, could you share: Any specific error codes you're getting? Did this start suddenly or gradually? Does your fan still work at all? Let me know these details and I can give you more specific insights from my experience.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Just checked and I'm getting the same symptoms you described. Mine's at 38090 KM and just had its service last month. The issue started quite suddenly, was working fine one day, completely dead the next. The fan's totally dead too, no response at all. No specific error codes showing up yet, just the general AC malfunction warning on the dash. Your repair situation sounds quite similar to what I'm experiencing. Did your workshop mention anything about the control module being a common failure point? Just trying to prepare myself mentally for the repair bill!

Hey again! Yeah, after dealing with the same problem on my old 5 series, I can totally relate to what you're going through. Since you mentioned it started suddenly and the fan's completely dead, that's exactly how mine went too. One morning, everything was fine, and boom, next thing I knew, nothing worked. About the control module being a common failure point, yeah, my workshop mechanic actually told me it's a pretty regular issue with these models. He said he'd seen quite a few cases, especially in cars around the 35-45K km mark. Funny enough, mine was at about 39K when it happened, so pretty close to your mileage. Quick tip though, before they replaced my control module, they did a full diagnostic check to rule out any other issues. Might be worth asking your workshop to do the same, just to be 100% sure. In my case, the diagnostic confirmed it was just the control module and nothing else. And yeah, hate to say it, but definitely prepare yourself for a hefty bill. These control modules aren't cheap, and the labor isn't either. But on the bright side, once it's fixed, it usually stays fixed, haven't had any AC issues since then. Let me know how it goes when you get it checked out. Really curious to hear if it's the same issue!

Thanks so much for all that detailed info! It's actually a relief to hear I'm not the only one who's dealt with this issue. What you've described matches my situation perfectly, especially that bit about the mileage sweet spot for these problems. Really appreciate the heads up about getting a full diagnostic check too, that's definitely something I'll request. I've actually just booked it in for next week, and I'm mentally preparing myself for that bill you mentioned. Given how similar our situations are, I'm pretty convinced it's going to be the control module. At least knowing it's a common issue makes me feel better about the whole thing, nothing worse than feeling like you're the only one with a particular car problem! I'll definitely keep you posted on what they find. Really grateful for your help and sharing your experience, it's made me feel much more informed about what I'm dealing with. Fingers crossed it's a straightforward fix like yours was!
