BMW 6 Series Rough Idle: Engine Mount Problems?

Unsteady engine

|

Fault stored

Hey all! Having some trouble with my 2012 BMW 6 series. The car vibrates more than normal, shows an error message, and idles pretty rough. I suspect a faulty engine mount might be the culprit. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms and had their engine mount replaced? Would love to hear about your repair experiences and what it took to fix it. Thanks!

Hey there! I have some experience working on BMWs. I actually had a similar issue with my 2014 BMW 5 series. Initially thought it was the engine mount too because of those exact symptoms, vibration, rough idle, and warning lights. Turned out it was just a loose connection in one of the engine sensor cables. The workshop found it pretty quickly during diagnosis. Total bill was 95 Euro for fixing the connection and clearing the error codes. Got it sorted in about an hour, and the car's been running smooth since then. What's the mileage on your 6 series? Also, does the vibration get worse when you're accelerating or is it constant? This info would help me share more relevant details from my experience.

Thanks for sharing that experience! My 6er has 121409 KM on the clock and just had its service last month. The vibration actually gets worse when I'm idling at traffic lights, and it's especially noticeable when the AC is running. Your sensor cable situation sounds interesting, definitely cheaper than replacing the whole mount! Did the warning light on yours come and go, or was it constant? Mine seems to flicker on and off out of nowhere, which is pretty annoying.

Oh yeah, I totally get what you mean about the flickering warning light, mine did exactly the same thing! It was super annoying, just coming on and off out of nowhere like yours. And you know what's interesting, my issue also got worse when idling with the AC on, just like what you're describing. I was really convinced it was the engine mount at first because the symptoms matched perfectly, but I'm so glad the mechanic checked those sensor connections first. With your mileage being similar to what mine was (I had about 118000 KM when this happened), and the symptoms being almost identical, especially that AC-related vibration, I'd bet you might be dealing with the same sensor issue. Quick question, have you noticed any difference in how the car behaves when you first start it in the morning compared to when the engine's warm? In my case, the vibration was definitely worse on cold starts, but it got a bit better once everything warmed up. If you're experiencing something similar, it might be another clue pointing toward the sensor connection rather than the mount. Trust me, I know how worrying these symptoms can be, I was already mentally preparing for a huge repair bill! But definitely get those sensor connections checked before jumping to engine mount replacement. Could save you quite a bit of money!

Thanks so much for the detailed response! You've actually given me some hope that this might not be as expensive as I feared. And yes, now that you mention it, the vibration is definitely worse during cold starts! The car seems to run a bit smoother once it's warmed up, though still not perfect. I'm really relieved to hear about your experience with the sensor connections. I was already dreading a massive repair bill, but this sounds much more manageable. I'll definitely have my mechanic check the sensor connections first before looking into the engine mount replacement. Makes total sense to start with the simpler fix, especially since our symptoms are so similar, the AC connection, the cold starts, and those annoying flickering warning lights. I'll book it in for a diagnostic check tomorrow and make sure to mention your sensor cable experience to the mechanic. Really appreciate you taking the time to share all this, it's super helpful to hear from someone who's dealt with the same issue!

Hello After scanning my 2004 BMW 330ci with Carly I got the following results Airbag - Fault 000050 - MRS: alim tensioning Transmission (GS2) - Fault 000031 - Bridge Bridge / Symptom gear motorization I can't find much information related to this What and how should I repair it

For the airbag fault (000050 - MRS: alim tensioning), it often relates to an issue with the seatbelt tensioner or the wiring/connection to it. Start by checking the seatbelt tensioner connections under the seat for any loose or damaged wires. For the transmission fault (000031 - Bridge Bridge / Symptom gear motorization), this could indicate an issue with the gear selector or its connections. Inspect the gear selector wiring and connectors for any signs of wear or damage. Both issues can affect vehicle safety, so it's important to address them promptly. If you're unsure or uncomfortable with these checks, I recommend having a professional mechanic inspect the vehicle. Let me know how it goes or if you have any further questions!
