Thanks for sharing your experience! Glad you got yours fixed with just a wiring repair. Mine's the gasoline variant and yes, I've noticed some hesitation during acceleration. Just had my latest service about 2,000 KM ago, and they didn't spot anything unusual then. Currently at 193,885 KM. I'll definitely have them check the wiring harness first before jumping to replace the entire sensor. The rough idling is definitely there, especially when the engine is cold. Haven't spotted any obvious loose connections myself, but I'm not really a pro at this. Did your car throw the same error code as mine? Hoping it's just a wiring issue like yours was!
Hey again! Yeah, my car actually threw the same error code as yours. The cold-start rough idle you're describing sounds exactly like what I experienced, it would shake a bit until the engine warmed up. Since you mentioned having similar symptoms and your car's just had a service, I'd bet money it's related to wiring. After my fix, I learned that these O2 sensor wiring issues are pretty common on our BMWs, especially at higher mileages. My car was around 180,000 KM when it happened. One thing I didn't mention in my first reply, before taking it to the workshop, I tried cleaning the connections myself but ended up making it worse. So definitely learned my lesson there! The professionals found that the insulation had worn through in a spot where the wiring harness bent near the exhaust manifold. Pretty typical wear and tear spot, apparently. Since you're having the acceleration hesitation too, I'm even more convinced it's the same issue. Quick tip though, make sure they check both O2 sensors' wiring. My mechanic said sometimes they can look fine but have tiny breaks in the wiring that only show up when the engine's hot. Keep us posted on what you find out. Would be interesting to know if it's the same problem!
Thanks so much for all the detailed info! You've honestly made me feel a lot better about this whole situation. I was worried I'd have to shell out for a completely new sensor setup, but hearing about your similar experience with the wiring is super helpful. I'll definitely stay away from trying to fix the connections myself, thanks for that warning! I've booked it in at the workshop for next week, and I'll make sure to ask them specifically about checking both O2 sensors' wiring, especially around that exhaust manifold bend you mentioned. The symptoms matching up so closely really does make me think it's the same issue. I'll post an update once I get it sorted. Really appreciate you taking the time to share all this, especially the bit about the cold start issues. It's exactly what I needed to know before heading to the workshop. You've probably saved me both time and money here!
My experience level: Some experience with car repairs Hey there! I had a similar issue with my 2005 BMW 5 series (the 530i). The symptoms were exactly the same, check engine light, terrible fuel consumption, and emissions problems. Initially, I thought it was the sensor itself, but when I took it to my regular workshop, they found it was actually just a damaged wiring harness and loose connection to the O2 sensor. The fix cost me 95 Euro, mainly labor for tracking down the connection issue and repairing the wiring. Much cheaper than replacing the entire sensor! The fuel economy went back to normal right after. Can you share which engine variant you have in your 6 series? Also, have you noticed any rough idling or hesitation during acceleration? This info would help me give you more specific advice based on my experience. By the way, have you had any other BMW repairs lately? Sometimes these issues can be related to recent work done on the car.
