BMW 6 Series CCV Valve Symptoms & Repair Help Needed

Loss of engine power

|

Check engine light on

Hi there! Has anyone dealt with crankcase ventilation valve issues on a 2004 BMW 6 series? My check engine light is on, experiencing power loss, and the speed keeps fluctuating. The car has about 155K km on it. Had some bad experiences with mechanics lately, so I'd appreciate hearing about your experiences and any trustworthy repair shops you'd recommend. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had the exact same issue with my 2007 BMW 5 series last summer. Initially thought it was something minor, but the symptoms matched yours perfectly, power loss, fluctuating speed, and that annoying check engine light. Had it checked and turned out the crankcase ventilation valve (PCV valve) was completely clogged. It's a fairly common issue on these engines actually. The repair involved replacing the entire valve assembly and some related hoses that had deteriorated. Took about 4-5 hours of labor. It's not the most serious issue, but definitely not something you want to ignore. If left unfixed, it can lead to oil leaks and potential engine damage. In my case, there was already some oil residue building up in places it shouldn't be. The car's been running smooth since the repair, no more power issues or fluctuating speeds. Just make sure whoever works on it knows BMW engines well, as the PCV system on these cars is a bit more complex than most. Best of luck!

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! I had the same thing fixed last year. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other issues pop up? Always good to know what to watch out for with these cars.

Hey again! I actually just got this sorted recently, paid 360€ for the whole PCV valve repair job, and honestly, it was worth every penny. The car's running like a dream now! That annoying power loss and speed fluctuation completely disappeared after they fixed the crankcase ventilation valve. Been about four months since the repair, and my 5 series is purring along perfectly, no check engine lights or any other drama. Such a relief after dealing with those frustrating symptoms! The mechanic did a thorough job, and I can really feel the difference in how the engine performs. If you're still having similar symptoms, definitely get it checked out. These BMWs are fantastic cars when everything's working right, but yeah, they do need proper maintenance. Mind you, some garages might quote you different prices, but around 360€ seems to be the going rate for this particular fix. Let me know if you notice anything else acting up, always happy to compare notes with fellow BMW owners!

Thanks for the detailed info about the cost and follow-up! I actually took your advice and got it fixed at a specialized shop a couple weeks ago. The whole thing cost me about 400€, which sounds pretty close to what you paid. The mechanic I found was really thorough, showed me the old clogged valve and explained everything. What a difference it's made! The car's running so much better now, no more power issues or that annoying speed fluctuation. Such a relief after dealing with those symptoms for weeks. Funny enough, the mechanic told me the same thing about these BMWs needing proper maintenance. He gave me some tips about regular oil changes and keeping an eye on the engine temp, which I've been following religiously. Haven't had a single issue since the repair. Really appreciate your help with this. It's good to know I wasn't being overcharged, and the fix actually worked out perfectly. Thanks again for steering me in the right direction!
